Two Buckled Rails and an A Frame That Measured True
Short answer
Both rails buckled at the forward spring hanger, three inches of set. The A frame was straight, which is what made the trailer worth repairing.
A 28 foot travel trailer jackknifed on a wet freeway ramp and buckled both frame rails just ahead of the forward spring hangers. The A frame and coupler measured straight. Repair involved sectioning both rails, replacing four hangers, and correcting a sidewall that had racked with the frame.

A 2019 travel trailer, 28 feet, tandem axle, came off a wet transition ramp sideways behind a half ton pickup and struck the guardrail with the driver side of the trailer just behind the propane compartment. The tow vehicle was undamaged apart from the hitch. The trailer had a visible dent in the sidewall, a destroyed propane cover and a wheel that looked like it was pointing the wrong way.
The wheel was pointing the wrong way. Both frame rails had buckled just ahead of the forward spring hangers, folding upward and inboard, which had rotated the entire forward hanger assembly and taken the axle out of alignment by a substantial margin. From the outside this read as a suspension complaint. It was a frame job.
This file is worth writing up because the interesting work was the measurement session, and because the repair or total decision came down to one specific finding: the A frame and coupler had not moved. That is the difference between a repairable trailer and a trailer whose remaining value is its appliances.

The Complaint Versus the Findings
The owner reported that the trailer towed badly on the way home from the incident, pulling to one side and making a rhythmic noise. They had driven it 34 miles in that condition, which is understandable and which added tire and bearing damage to the scope. Both driver side tires had scrubbed shoulders from running at an angle and one bearing had discolored races when we pulled the hub.
The visible body damage was a dent about 30 inches across in the lower sidewall, the propane compartment door destroyed, and a scrape running back about six feet. All cosmetic apart from one detail: the entry door on that side would not latch without lifting, which is the symptom that tells you the body has moved rather than just been dented.
Underneath, both main rails showed a buckle in the lower flange and a corresponding kink in the web, positioned within four inches of each other side to side, roughly eight inches ahead of the forward spring hanger. Total set measured with a string line was 3 and 1/8 inches of upward deviation on the driver rail and 2 and 3/4 inches on the passenger rail.

Six Hours With a String Line and a Tape
Measurement started with the trailer level on stands at four points chosen away from the damage, because a trailer supported at a damaged point tells you about the support, not about the frame. Then a taut string line down each rail from a fixed forward reference to a fixed aft reference, with offset measurements taken every 12 inches. That produces a profile you can plot, and plotting it shows you exactly where the deviation starts and ends rather than where it looks worst.
Then the A frame. Coupler height above a level floor, coupler centerline against the trailer centerline established from the rear, and diagonals from the coupler to identified points on each rail. Those all measured within a sixteenth of an inch of each other and of the published dimensions. The A frame had not moved, which meant the towing geometry was intact and the repair was bounded.
Then the suspension. Hanger to hanger distances on each side, hanger centerline to a common reference forward, and axle centerline to the coupler on both sides. Driver side coupler to axle measured 1 and 5/8 inches shorter than passenger side, which is a large number and which fully explained the towing behavior. Finally opening diagonals: the entry door opening was out by 7/16 of an inch and the nearest window by 1/4.
The Decision, and How It Nearly Went the Other Way
The carrier had this on a path toward a total loss. The valuation report showed actual cash value at $28,600 and the first repair estimate, written by a shop that does not do frame work, was $23,900. That ratio puts it over most thresholds, and a total loss declaration was two days away when the owner asked for a second opinion.
The reason that first estimate was high is that it specified frame replacement. Replacing a trailer frame means separating the entire body from the chassis, which is a very large job and which on many trailers is not practical because the body was assembled on the frame. Sectioning the damaged region instead of replacing the whole rail is a different order of work.
Our teardown based number was $14,200 including the body, suspension, tires, bearings and refinishing. That brought the ratio well under the threshold and the carrier authorized the repair. The measurement package is what made that possible: a plotted rail profile, a table of suspension dimensions and a set of opening diagonals is verifiable, and a reviewer can approve verifiable work. A narrative saying the frame can probably be fixed cannot be approved by anybody.

How the Rails Were Actually Repaired
Support first, at eight points, with the body weight carried off the damaged region entirely. Then the buckled sections were cut out, 22 inches on the driver rail and 18 on the passenger, with the cuts made at 45 degrees rather than square. An angled cut in a rail spreads the weld across the section rather than putting a transverse weld line straight through it, which matters because a transverse weld across a loaded flange is a stress riser.
New material of matching section was fitted with the same angled joints, tacked, checked against the string line, adjusted, then welded out in sequence to control distortion. Then internal sleeving was added spanning each joint: a length of section inside the rail, bolted and welded, which carries load across the joint independently of the weld itself. That sleeving is what makes a sectioned rail as strong as an original rail and it is what distinguishes a proper repair from a cosmetic one.
Four spring hangers came off and were replaced, because two were deformed and the other two had been loaded past yield even though they looked acceptable. Hanger position was set from the plotted measurements, not from the old holes, which is important because the old holes were in the wrong place by definition. Then axle alignment was checked, adjusted with the equalizer and shackle hardware, and verified by measuring coupler to axle on both sides within an eighth of an inch.
Body Correction, Final Numbers and the Calendar
With the frame corrected, the entry door opening came back to within an eighth of an inch on its own, which is the useful confirmation that the body racking had been frame driven rather than independent. The window opening needed a small correction at the lower corner. The sidewall dent was repaired as a fiberglass repair rather than a panel replacement because the substrate behind it metered dry and the tap test showed only a nine inch delaminated zone, which was injected and clamped.
Then propane compartment door, refinish of the affected sidewall area with a blend, two new tires, one bearing set with both races and a new seal, and a full brake inspection on that axle. Total labor 96 hours across structural, mechanical and refinish. Body and paint bills at $210 per hour and mechanical at $260 per hour, and this job carried both plus $45 hazmat because the propane compartment was involved.
The calendar was 19 working days. Six of those were the measurement, documentation and authorization sequence at the front, which felt slow to the owner and which is what saved the trailer. Nothing about this job was exotic. It was measurement, a decision made from numbers rather than from appearance, and a rail repair done with angled joints and internal sleeving instead of a weld across a flange.
