Two complaints bring most people to this page, and they are more connected than they look. The first is a leveling system that throws an error, drops one corner overnight, or refuses to retract with the coach loaded. The second is a coach that wanders on the I-5, porpoises over the expansion joints, or is eating the inside edge of one tire. Both come back to the same set of components carrying the same load in different states.

A leveling jack is a structural member every time it is down. It carries a corner of your coach, and when a solenoid weeps or a cylinder seal passes, that corner settles while you sleep. On a big fifth wheel that means the frame is being twisted for eight hours at a time, which is how slide seals get out of square and how door openings shift. It is not just an inconvenience issue.

On the ride side, the components are simple and the diagnosis is not. Wandering can be a worn steering damper, a soft air bag, a sagging leaf pack, an alignment issue or a bearing with play in it, and they all feel similar from the driver seat. We start every one of these on the diagnostic rate at $285 per hour with a one hour minimum, credited back against the repair, because guessing at ride complaints costs owners far more than the diagnostic does.

Hydraulic and Electric Leveling Are Two Different Systems

Hydraulic leveling uses a pump driving fluid through a solenoid manifold out to cylinders at each corner. It is powerful, it is standard on larger Class A coaches and heavy fifth wheels, and its failure modes are fluid based: leaking cylinder rod seals, a solenoid that will not seat, a low reservoir, a pump motor drawing too much current, or air in the lines from a system that was run dry.

Electric leveling uses a motor and gearbox on each jack driving a screw. There is no fluid, so there is no leak, but there is a motor, a gear set and a clutch on each corner. Failures are electrical and mechanical: a motor with a burned winding, a stripped nylon gear, a corroded connector at the jack, or a controller that has lost position reference. Electric jacks are far more common on mid-size towables.

The diagnostic path differs sharply. On a hydraulic complaint we start with fluid level, then pressure test, then isolate the manifold to find which solenoid is passing. On an electric complaint we start with a voltage drop test at the jack under load, because low voltage at a jack motor mimics a failed motor almost exactly and gets a lot of good motors thrown away. Knowing which system you have determines the first thirty minutes of work.

Hydraulic failure modes
Rod seal weep, a solenoid that will not seat, low reservoir, air in the lines and pump motor current draw. A corner that drops overnight is almost always a passing solenoid or a rod seal.
Electric failure modes
Burned motor windings, stripped nylon gear sets, corroded jack connectors and controllers that lost position reference. Nothing leaks, but everything is on a connector.
Voltage drop before parts
Low voltage at an electric jack under load looks exactly like a dead motor. We measure at the jack, not at the battery, before anything gets ordered.
Manifold isolation
On hydraulic systems we isolate the manifold circuit by circuit to identify which solenoid is passing fluid rather than replacing the whole assembly on suspicion.
A dropped corner twists the frame
A jack that settles overnight racks the chassis for hours at a time. That is a direct cause of slide seal failure and shifted door openings, not just an annoyance.

Lippert, HWH, BigFoot, Power Gear and BAL: What Fails on Each

Five systems cover nearly everything in the field. Lippert, including the Ground Control and Level Up families, is on the majority of current towables and a great many motorhomes. HWH is the long-standing hydraulic name on premium coaches and has its own control logic and terminology. BigFoot builds heavy hydraulic and electric systems with a reputation for load capacity. Power Gear, now under Lippert, is on a large installed base. BAL is common on trailers with the older scissor and cable systems.

They fail in characteristic ways. Lippert Level Up complaints most often trace to the controller losing zero point after a battery disconnect, or to a specific jack motor connector corroding. HWH systems are typically robust mechanically and fail at the solenoid manifold or the touch panel. Power Gear electric jacks are known for gear set wear on the front pair, which carry the most weight on a Class A. BAL cable systems stretch and fray their cables long before anything else goes.

Parts support is the practical difference between a two day job and a two month one. Lippert and HWH are both well supported today, and most components can be sourced inside a week. Older Power Gear and BAL hardware increasingly requires either salvaged parts or a conversion to a current system. We will tell you plainly when a conversion is the better spend rather than letting you chase an obsolete controller through three suppliers for six weeks while your coach sits. That call gets made in the estimate, not after we have your deposit.

Lippert Level Up and Ground Control
Most common current system. Typical faults are lost zero point after a battery disconnect and corroded jack motor connectors, both of which mimic a failed jack.
HWH hydraulic
Premium coach standard with its own control logic. Mechanically durable. Faults concentrate at the solenoid manifold and the touch panel rather than at the cylinders.
BigFoot
Heavy capacity hydraulic and electric systems. Well built, but rebuild parts and controller support need to be confirmed by serial before a repair plan is written.
Power Gear
Large installed base now under Lippert. Front pair gear set wear is the signature failure on Class A applications because those jacks carry the most static load.
BAL scissor and cable
Common on trailers. Cables stretch and fray, and the scissor pivots wear oval. Usually a mechanical rebuild rather than an electrical diagnosis.

Why Auto-Level Throws an Error and What Calibration Actually Does

Auto-level is a controller reading a level sensor and deciding which jacks to extend and in what order. It only works if the controller knows two things: where true zero is for that coach, and where each jack is in its travel. Lose either reference and the system will either refuse to run or confidently level your coach to the wrong plane. Neither of those is a mechanical failure, which is why so many owners replace a jack that was working fine and end up with the identical error message the following week.

The single most common cause of a sudden auto-level fault is a battery disconnect or a low voltage event. The controller drops its stored zero point, and now every automatic cycle produces an error or a coach that ends up visibly off. Owners assume a jack failed. Nothing failed. The system needs to be re-zeroed on a known level surface, which is a procedure and takes a specific sequence, not a button press.

That is one reason this work is in shop only. Re-zeroing requires a genuinely level floor, and a parking lot is not level. We calibrate on our shop floor, then verify by running a full auto cycle and measuring the result rather than trusting the display. Where the sensor itself has drifted, which happens on older units, calibration will not hold and the sensor gets replaced before we call the job done.

Lost zero point
Battery disconnect or a low voltage event wipes the stored level reference. The system errors or levels to the wrong plane, and owners mistake it for jack failure.
Jack position reference
The controller tracks where each jack is in its travel. Retract-and-relearn re-establishes that reference, and it must be done in the right sequence to take.
A level floor is required
Calibration on an uneven surface teaches the controller a wrong zero. This is a shop procedure on a measured floor, which is one reason we do not do it anywhere else.
Verify by measurement
After calibration we run a full auto cycle and measure the resulting plane rather than trusting the panel display, because a bad sensor will report level while sitting crooked.
Sensor drift on older units
When calibration will not hold across cycles, the level sensor itself has drifted and gets replaced. Repeated recalibration on a drifted sensor just wastes labor.

Air Bags, Shocks and Steering Stabilizers Change How It Drives

A coach that wanders in the wind on the 73, or that keeps oscillating after a dip on the I-5, is telling you something specific. Wandering under crosswind load usually points at a worn steering damper, soft or unequal air bags, or a sagging spring pack that has changed the geometry. Oscillation that continues after the input is over is almost always shocks that have lost damping, and shocks on an RV are a wear item that most owners have never replaced.

Air bag suspension on the rear of many Class A and Super C chassis is a real diagnostic area. Bags develop pinhole leaks at the folds, the height control valve linkage bends or seizes, and the air dryer saturates and pushes moisture downstream. A coach that sits down on one side overnight has a bag or a valve issue, not a leveling issue, and telling those two apart is exactly what an hour of diagnostic time buys you.

Steering stabilizers and supplemental damping products are a category where owners spend money hoping for a fix. Sometimes they help. More often they mask a worn component underneath, and the wander comes back within a year. We would rather find the worn component. If the underlying geometry and damping are correct and you still want additional stabilization, that is a reasonable add-on, but it goes second.

Air bag pinhole leaks
Bags fail at the fold where the rubber flexes. A coach that settles on one side overnight has a bag or a height control valve issue rather than a leveling fault.
Height control valve linkage
Bent or seized linkage holds a bag at the wrong ride height permanently, which changes geometry, loads one side heavier and shows up as pull and uneven tire wear.
Shock damping loss
Continued oscillation after a dip means the shocks stopped damping. They are a wear item on an RV and are frequently original at a hundred thousand miles.
Steering damper wear
Crosswind wander on the freeway often traces to a worn steering damper. It is a cheap part that gets overlooked while owners buy expensive add-on stabilization.
Stabilizers go second
Add-on stabilization can help a correct chassis. On a worn one it masks the real problem, and the wander returns. We diagnose the underlying component first.

Springs, Bearings, Axles and What Tire Wear Is Telling You

Towable running gear is the most neglected system in the RV world, and it is the one that strands people. Leaf spring packs on trailers sag and eventually break a leaf, which drops that corner and immediately overloads the tire on that axle. Equalizers and shackle bushings wear oval, letting the tandem axles fight each other. Wet bolt kits exist because the factory dry bolts wear out on a predictable schedule.

Wheel bearings need a repack roughly every twelve thousand miles or annually, and this is not optional maintenance in coastal humidity. Bearings that were packed with the wrong grease, or that have taken water past a tired seal, fail at highway speed and take the spindle with them. A repack and hub service runs $250 to $1,200 and it is the cheapest insurance on this page.

Tire wear is a diagnostic instrument if you read it. Inside edge wear on one side of a tandem usually means axle misalignment or a bent axle from a curb strike. Center wear means overinflation. Both shoulders worn means underinflation and probably overloading. Cupping or scalloping means damping loss or a bearing with play. We photograph every tire on intake for a ride complaint, because the tires will frequently tell us the answer before we put a wrench on anything.

Leaf pack sag and broken leaves
A sagged or broken pack drops that corner and overloads the tire on that axle immediately. On tandems it also throws load onto the other axle unevenly.
Equalizers and shackle bushings
Worn oval bushings let tandem axles fight each other over bumps. Wet bolt conversions replace the dry factory hardware that wears out on a predictable schedule.
Bearing repack interval
Roughly twelve thousand miles or annually. Water past a tired seal or the wrong grease produces a highway speed failure that takes the spindle with it.
Dexter and AL-KO axle service
Bent axles from curb strikes, worn spindles and brake assembly replacement. Axle straightening or replacement is measured against camber and toe spec, not eyeballed.
Read the tire wear pattern
Inside edge means misalignment or a bent axle. Center means overinflation. Both shoulders means underinflation or overload. Cupping means damping loss or bearing play.

What Leveling and Suspension Work Costs

This category has the most predictable pricing of anything we do, because the parts are known and the labor is measurable. What moves a number is access. Replacing a hydraulic cylinder on an open trailer frame is straightforward. Replacing the same cylinder on a Class A where the exhaust, a holding tank and a slide mechanism sit in front of it is several more hours for the same part.

Mechanical and electrical labor is posted at $260 per hour. Diagnostics are $285 per hour with a one hour minimum, and that hour is credited back against the repair when you authorize the work with us. We charge for diagnosis on this category deliberately, because leveling and ride complaints are where parts get replaced on guesses, and a paid hour of correct diagnosis is consistently the cheapest line on the final invoice.

    What it does, when it started, whether a battery was disconnected, and what has already been replaced. Tires get photographed before anything else happens.

Questions We Get Asked

One leveling jack drops overnight. Is that the jack or the pump?

On a hydraulic system it is almost always a passing solenoid at the manifold or a leaking rod seal on that cylinder, not the pump. The pump would affect all corners. We isolate the manifold circuit by circuit to identify which solenoid is bypassing rather than replacing the whole assembly. On an electric system a dropping corner is usually a stripped gear set or a failed brake in that jack motor.

My auto-level throws an error after I disconnected the batteries. Is it broken?

Probably not. A battery disconnect or a low voltage event commonly wipes the controller stored zero point, and the system then errors or levels to the wrong plane. It needs to be re-zeroed on a genuinely level surface with the correct retract and relearn sequence. That is a shop procedure on a measured floor, not something a parking lot will let you do accurately.

What does RV leveling system repair cost?

How often do RV wheel bearings need to be repacked?

Roughly every twelve thousand miles or once a year, whichever comes first, and it is not optional in coastal humidity. Bearings packed with the wrong grease or that have taken water past a tired seal fail at highway speed and usually destroy the spindle with them. Repack and hub service runs $250 to $1,200 across one to five hours. It is the cheapest preventive item on this page.

My trailer is wearing the inside edge of one tire. What causes that?

Usually axle misalignment or a bent axle from a curb or pothole strike, and occasionally a sagged leaf pack on that corner changing the geometry. We measure camber and toe against specification rather than eyeballing it, because a bent axle can look straight and still be several degrees out. Continuing to tow on it destroys tires and eventually loads the bearing unevenly.

Do you service suspension on Sprinter and Transit van conversions?

Yes. Loaded conversions carrying water, batteries and a roof rack routinely run near the rear axle rating, and factory springs and dampers were not chosen for that duty cycle. We handle rear air bag helper systems, upgraded shocks, sway bars and alignment after a build-out. Rear sag and freeway wander on a finished van conversion is a load and damping problem far more often than a defect.
