How OCRV Center Became an RV Shop

OCRV Center was founded in 2011 as a general collision shop in Orange County. After taking on Class A motorhome work that other shops turned away, the business specialized, moved into a 35,000 square foot building in Yorba Linda, and now repairs RVs, vans, trailers and commercial trucks.

Nobody sets out to open an RV shop. There is no trade school for it, no franchise model, and no supplier who shows up wanting to sell you a starter package. What there is, in Orange County, is an enormous number of motorhomes and almost nowhere qualified to fix them, and eventually somebody notices that gap and walks into it.
We opened in 2011 doing what everyone else does: cars, light trucks, insurance work. Good crew, decent volume, nothing remarkable. The turn happened the way most turns do in this trade, which is that somebody asked us to do something we had not done before and we said yes when we probably should have said no.
Fifteen years later the building is 35,000 square feet, the crew works on coaches that cost more than most houses in this county, and there is a 1959 transit bus in the back that has been apart for eleven months. This is how that happened.
A General Body Shop, 2011
The original shop was ordinary. Four bays, one booth, a frame rack we bought used from a dealership that was closing, and a customer base that came almost entirely from three insurance agents who liked us. We were competent and we were not special, and in the collision trade being competent and not special means you compete on cycle time forever.
What we did have was a paint department that was better than the building it was in. Our painter at the time had come out of a custom shop and could match anything, including the metallic silvers that most production shops quietly send back for a respray. That capability is what put the first motorhome in front of us, because a customer with a coach nobody would touch went looking for someone who could match a factory graphics package.

The Class A Nobody Else Would Take
It was a 2006 diesel pusher, 40 feet, front cap caved in on the passenger side from a jersey barrier on the 91. The owner had been to four shops. Two would not touch it. One quoted him a number that was obviously a walk-away price. The fourth said yes and then called him back a week later and said no. He got to us at the end of a bad month for him and we looked at it for two hours before answering.
We took it, and we lost money on it. Not a little. We had no idea what a laminated sidewall was going to do when we started pulling it, we had never sourced a cap before, and the reseal work at the end took three times what anyone had guessed. It sat in that shop for nineteen weeks and it consumed a bay we needed.
It also taught us more in five months than the previous three years had. By the time it left, we understood why nobody wanted this work: it is slow, it does not fit the insurance cycle-time model, and the failure modes are structural in ways that automotive training does not cover. Which is precisely why the owners had nowhere to go, and precisely why the work was worth having.

Buying 35,000 Square Feet
Within two years the RV work was most of the revenue and all of the constraint. We could not paint a 43 foot coach in a booth built for a sedan. We were masking and spraying in sections, which is slower, more expensive and produces a worse result, and we were turning away every Class A over 38 feet because there was physically nowhere to put it.
The decision to buy the building on La Palma was not sophisticated. We sat down, added up the jobs we had declined in eighteen months for reasons of space alone, and the number was larger than the mortgage. That was the entire analysis. We closed on it, spent most of a year on the booth and the compressed air and the lighting, and moved.
The building changed what was possible in ways we had not fully predicted. Having enough floor to leave a coach torn down for three weeks while parts came, without that coach blocking anything, is the single largest quality improvement we ever made. Shops rush work because they need the bay. We stopped needing the bay.

How Fleet and Van Work Found Us
Commercial work arrived without being pursued. A local plumbing contractor with eleven vans asked whether the shop that could match a Newmar paint scheme could also match his fleet white and reproduce his graphics, because he was tired of coordinating a body shop and a sign shop that blamed each other. We said yes, and that account is still with us.
Van conversions came next and came fast. Somewhere around 2019 the Sprinter build-out market went from a hobby to an industry, and every one of those vehicles is a laminated structure with a house electrical system, roof penetrations and cabinetry, which is an RV with a Mercedes badge. We already had that skill set. We just had to admit it applied.
Today the floor on any given week has motorhomes, camper vans, delivery vans, box trucks, utility trailers and the occasional municipal unit on it at the same time. They are more alike than they look. All of them are a chassis carrying a structure that flexes, sealed against water by joints that fail, powered by systems that nobody documents well.

What Is On the Floor Right Now
The best snapshot of what this shop has become is a walk through it on an ordinary Tuesday. In the back corner there is a 1959 Flxible VL-100, a transit coach with a monocoque body and no available parts of any kind, currently eleven months into a restoration. Everything on it is fabricated, measured off the original, and welded by hand. There is no catalog. There is no forum thread that covers it.
Fifty feet away are two 2026 Sprinter chassis in for conversion damage and roof penetration correction, and a Rivian that came in for quarter panel work and needed a full ADAS recalibration before it could leave. Three vehicles, sixty-seven years apart, and the same two questions on all of them: is the structure straight, and is it sealed.
That range is not a marketing point, it is the actual working condition of the building, and it is the reason the crew is the way it is. A technician who can fabricate a compound curve for a 1959 bus and then calibrate a camera on a 2026 electric truck is not a common hire. Finding those people took longer than buying the building did.

What Has Not Changed Since 2011
Three things. We still tear down before we write the final plan, which we learned the hard way on that first diesel pusher. We still do the structural work ourselves rather than sending it out, because the first time you sublet a frame pull and get it back out of spec you stop doing that. And we still tell people numbers they do not want to hear, early, rather than late.
The last one costs us jobs and we have made peace with it. A customer who wants to hear $4,000 and hears $19,000 from us is going to go find the shop that says $4,000. Some of them come back in eleven weeks when that shop discovers the sidewall. We would rather be the second call than be the shop that made the first one.

We do take current-model passenger vehicles for panel and refinish work, including EVs requiring ADAS recalibration, but the building, the tooling and the crew are set up around specialty vehicles.
