Refinishing a motorhome is the highest risk job in this building. There is no second chance on paint. Every hour of body work, every panel repair and every dollar of structural correction underneath it is judged by whether the finish reads flat and even in direct Southern California sun. A coach that was straightened perfectly and painted carelessly looks worse than one that was never touched, because now the eye has a fresh surface to catch every defect on.
The scale is what breaks most shops. A 40 foot Class A has roughly the surface area of eight sedans, and it is not flat. It has compound curves at both caps, slide faces that sit in a different plane than the sidewall, deep basement compartment recesses, and a roof that nobody sees but that still has to be masked and sealed. Getting consistent film build and consistent metallic orientation across that much area takes booth capacity and a crew that has done it repeatedly.

If your coach needs any of that, it happens first and it happens completely, because paint is the last operation and the only one that cannot be corrected without starting over.
Why Painting an RV Is Not Painting a Very Large Car
Automotive refinish assumes a steel or aluminum substrate with a factory e-coat, consistent thermal behavior, and panels small enough to shoot in a single pass. An RV violates all three. The substrate is fiberglass over foam and plywood, which expands and contracts at a different rate than metal and holds solvent differently. Panels are twelve feet long. And large sections of what you are painting are not original paint at all, they are gelcoat, which is a pigmented polyester surface layer with completely different adhesion requirements.
Prep is where the job is won. Gelcoat that has chalked in the sun has to be cut back to sound material, and anything with wax or silicone contamination has to be stripped, because silicone is the source of the fisheye craters that force a panel to be redone. On coaches that have been detailed with cheap products for a decade, the decontamination stage alone can run twenty hours before a single ounce of primer is sprayed.
The other difference is masking. A coach has more than a hundred penetrations: marker lights, vents, awning rails, service doors, antennas, ladder mounts, tank fills. Every one gets masked or removed, and removal is usually correct, because tape lines at a marker light are the tell that separates a real refinish from a driveway job.
- Gelcoat is not paint
- It is a pigmented polyester layer sprayed into the mold. It chalks rather than peels, and it requires cutting back to sound material and a dedicated adhesion promoter before any primer goes on.
- Silicone contamination
- A decade of cheap spray waxes leaves silicone in the surface. Left in place it produces fisheye craters that appear only after the color coat is down, forcing the panel to be stripped and reshot.
- Thermal movement
- Fiberglass over foam moves differently than steel. Flash and bake schedules that work on a car will trap solvent in an RV panel and produce dieback weeks later, when the gloss quietly drops.
- Hardware removal
- Lights, rails, moldings, ladders and service doors come off rather than get taped around. Tape lines at a penetration are the single clearest sign the coach was not properly refinished.
- Panel length and film build
- Twelve foot panels require overlapping passes with a consistent gun distance and speed. Uneven film build shows up as banding and mottling in metallic, and it is visible from thirty feet.
What Happens Inside the Booth on a 40 Foot Coach
The sequence is decontamination, sanding, repair of any surface defects, primer, block sanding, sealer, color, clear, then cure. Nothing skips. A coach going through full refinish typically spends more time in prep than in the booth by a factor of three or four, and that ratio is the honest reason a full body paint costs what it costs. Booth time is expensive but finite. Prep hours are where 40 to 250 total hours actually go.
Block sanding is the stage owners never see and always feel the absence of. After primer, the surface is blocked flat with long boards so that reflections run straight down the length of the coach instead of waving. On a sidewall with a repaired section, this is the operation that makes the repair disappear. Rush it and you get a finish that looks acceptable in the shop and reveals a low spot the first time the coach is parked in afternoon sun.
Cure matters as much as application. Fresh clear needs a controlled bake and then time before it can be cut and polished. We do not release a coach the day the clear goes on, and we tell owners to hold off on any pressure washing or wax for the first thirty days while the film finishes crosslinking.
- Decontamination and strip
- Wax, silicone and road film removed chemically and mechanically before any abrasive touches the surface, so contamination is not driven deeper into the substrate by sanding.
- Primer and block sanding
- High build primer applied and blocked flat with long boards. This is the stage that determines whether reflections run straight down a twelve foot panel or wave through the repair area.
- Sealer and color
- Sealer for uniform holdout over mixed substrates, then color applied in overlapping passes with controlled gun distance so metallic and pearl orientation stays consistent across the panel.
- Clear and bake
- Clear applied at spec film build and baked on a controlled schedule. Rushing the bake traps solvent and produces dieback, where gloss drops noticeably several weeks after delivery.
- Cut, polish and cure time
- After cure, the finish is cut and polished to remove texture and dust nibs. We ask owners to avoid pressure washing and wax for thirty days while the film finishes crosslinking.
How We Match Color on Gelcoat That Has Faded for Ten Years
The formula on the build sheet describes what the coach looked like leaving the factory. It does not describe what it looks like now. Ten years of Southern California sun on a white gelcoat coach parked in Talega will shift the surface measurably yellow and drop its gloss to nothing. Spraying the original formula next to that produces a repair that is technically correct and visually obvious, because the new panel is brighter than everything around it.
We spectrophotometer the actual panel, then spray out test cards and check them against the coach in daylight rather than under booth light. Metallic and pearl finishes add another variable, because the orientation of the flake changes with gun distance and air pressure, and two panels sprayed with identical paint can read differently if the technique varied. Test cards are cheap. Repainting a sidewall is not.
Where a perfect match is not achievable, the correct answer is blending. Color is carried into the adjacent panels and faded out at a natural break so that the eye never sees a hard edge between old and new. Blending runs $500 to $5,000 depending on how many panels have to be brought in, and it is almost always cheaper than the alternative, which is repainting the whole side.
- Read the panel, not the build sheet
- Spectrophotometer readings are taken from the actual faded surface. The factory formula describes a coach that no longer exists after a decade of ultraviolet exposure.
- Spray out and daylight check
- Test cards are sprayed with the intended technique and compared to the coach outdoors. Booth lighting flatters a mismatch that afternoon sun will expose immediately.
- Metallic and pearl orientation
- Flake alignment shifts with gun distance, pressure and film build. Identical paint applied with different technique will read as two different colors on adjacent panels.
- Blending into adjacent panels
- Color is carried past the repair and faded at a natural break so no hard edge exists. Runs $500 to $5,000 depending on panel count and whether graphics cross the blend area.
- When to repaint a full side
- If the fade is severe and the repair is central to a long panel, refinishing the entire side is sometimes both cheaper and better looking than an aggressive multi panel blend.
Single Stage, Base Plus Clear and Multi Stage: Which One Your Coach Has
Knowing which system is on your coach determines both what a repair costs and what is even possible. Older and entry level units are often single stage, where pigment and gloss are in the same coat. Single stage is cheap, easy to spot repair and easy to polish, but it chalks and it has no ultraviolet sacrificial layer, which is why twenty year old coaches look flat rather than peeled. It can be matched and blended without much drama.
Base plus clear is the mainstream system on mid grade and higher coaches from roughly the last twenty five years. Color goes down flat, clear goes over it for gloss and ultraviolet protection. Repairs are more involved because the clear has to be blended or taken to a panel edge, but the finish lasts far longer and can be corrected repeatedly. Failure mode is clear coat delamination, where the top layer peels in sheets and cannot be spot repaired.
Full body multi stage is what you find on high line diesel pushers: three, four or five layers including pearls, candies and layered graphics applied wet on wet. These are beautiful and they are expensive to touch. A single panel repair on a five stage scheme can require reproducing the entire layer stack across that panel and blending each layer separately.
- Single stage
- Pigment and gloss in one coat. Common on older and entry level coaches. Chalks rather than peels, spot repairs easily, and polishes back to acceptable gloss for a fraction of a refinish.
- Base plus clear
- Color under a clear ultraviolet layer. Standard on most coaches built in the last twenty five years. Durable and correctable, but clear coat failure requires refinish rather than spot repair.
- Multi stage full body paint
- Three to five layers with pearls, candies and layered graphics. Repairs require reproducing the whole stack across the panel, which is why high line coaches carry high line refinish costs.
- Clear coat failure
- When clear peels in sheets, the ultraviolet barrier is gone and the base underneath is exposed. There is no spot repair for this. The affected panels have to be stripped and refinished.
Decals, Graphics and Choosing Between Paint and Vinyl
Most RVs wear their identity in vinyl rather than paint. The swoosh down the sidewall, the brand script on the cap and the model badge are usually printed and laminated vinyl applied over the gelcoat. Vinyl has a service life of roughly five to eight years in this climate before the laminate crazes, the edges lift and the color shifts. By then the manufacturer has typically discontinued the exact pattern, which is the reason so many coaches drive around with one faded original decal and one obviously newer replacement.
We handle this three ways. If the pattern is still available from the manufacturer or a licensed reproducer, we order it. If it is not, we photograph, scale and reproduce the graphic on our own printer and cut it to match. If the owner wants the scheme in paint rather than vinyl, we mask and spray it, which costs more up front and lasts three times as long. Decal and graphics work runs $500 to $5,500 depending on complexity and coverage.
Full vinyl wrap is the other option, running $1,500 to $9,500. A wrap changes the entire appearance without booth time and it protects the surface underneath, but it requires sound gelcoat to adhere to. Wrapping over oxidized or delaminating surface is a waste of money, and we will say so rather than take the job.
- Manufacturer replacement decals
- Ordered directly when the pattern is still produced. Fastest and most accurate path, available for roughly the first eight to ten years of a model run and rarely after that.
- Reproduced graphics
- Existing decal photographed, scaled, color matched and reprinted in house when the original is discontinued. This is the normal path on any coach older than about a decade.
- Painted graphics
- The scheme masked and sprayed instead of applied in vinyl. Higher up front cost, roughly three times the service life, and no lifting edges to catch a pressure washer.
- Full vinyl wrap
- Complete appearance change for $1,500 to $9,500 with 10 to 40 hours of labor. Requires sound gelcoat underneath. Wrapping over oxidation or delamination fails within a season.
Oxidation Correction, Paint Correction and Protective Coatings
Not every dull coach needs paint. A great many of them need correction. Oxidation is the surface layer of gelcoat or single stage paint breaking down under ultraviolet exposure into a chalky, light scattering film. Underneath that film the material is frequently sound. Compounding and polishing removes the dead layer and brings gloss back, and on a coach that has never been corrected the difference is dramatic. Detail labor runs $95 per hour, which makes correction the highest value operation in this building relative to cost.
There are limits, and we will tell you where yours is. Gelcoat is a finite thickness, usually well under a millimeter, and every correction removes some of it. A coach that has been aggressively buffed three times may not have enough material left to correct a fourth. If we measure thin material or find fiberglass strand pattern showing through, correction stops and the honest recommendation becomes refinish.
After correction, protection is what determines whether you are back in five years. Ceramic coating provides a sacrificial hydrophobic layer that resists ultraviolet and makes washing far easier. Paint protection film is applied to the front cap and leading edges where rock strike is the real threat. Neither is required, and neither is a substitute for keeping the coach covered.
- Oxidation correction
- Multi stage compound and polish that removes the chalked surface layer and restores gloss. Billed at $95 per hour detail labor and frequently the right answer instead of a full refinish.
- Gelcoat thickness limits
- Gelcoat is finite and every correction consumes some. We measure before cutting. If strand pattern is showing through or material reads thin, correction stops and refinish becomes the honest recommendation.
- Ceramic coating
- A sacrificial hydrophobic layer applied after correction that resists ultraviolet degradation and makes washing dramatically easier. Applied to sound, corrected surface only.
- Paint protection film
- Clear urethane film on the front cap, leading edges and rock strike zones. Most valuable on high line coaches where a chip repair means reproducing a five layer paint stack.

Can you just polish my RV instead of painting it?
Often yes. Oxidation is a chalked surface layer over material that is frequently still sound, and multi stage compounding at $95 per hour detail labor restores gloss for a small fraction of a refinish. The limit is thickness. Gelcoat is finite, and if we measure thin material or see fiberglass strand pattern showing through, refinish becomes the honest recommendation.
How long will my coach be in the shop for a full repaint?
Plan on four to ten weeks. Prep consumes three to four times the booth time, and disassembly, decontamination, primer and block sanding are where most of that goes. Graphics reproduction adds a week if the pattern is discontinued. We give you a written target at authorization and update it whenever it moves, with the reason attached.
Will insurance pay for repainting my RV?
Insurance pays to restore the finish in the damaged area, including blending into adjacent panels so no hard edge is visible. It does not pay to refinish an undamaged coach that has simply faded. Where damage sits in the middle of a long, heavily faded panel, a full side refinish is sometimes the defensible position and we will document that argument for your adjuster.
Do you paint camper vans and Sprinter conversions?
Yes. Van shells are automotive substrate and refinish cleanly, but conversions add fiberglass high tops, pop top caps, flares and roof structures that are a different material with different adhesion requirements. Those get their own prep. Two tone schemes and matte or satin finishes are common on van builds and both require specific handling for repairs later.
Can you match fleet colors across multiple trucks?
Yes. We keep the formula and the spray technique documented per account so unit twelve matches unit one two years later. Fleet color drift is almost always a technique problem rather than a formula problem, so we record gun setup and film build alongside the mix. We can stage units so you are not down more than one at a time.
