Scope first, because it matters most to fleet and agency buyers. On buses, municipal fleets and specialty vehicles we do body repair, paint and refinish, structural repair and equipment installation. We do not perform engine, drivetrain or transmission work, and we do not perform DOT inspections or issue inspection reports. Those belong at your heavy diesel provider. What comes to us is sheet metal, fiberglass, composite panel, structure, paint, graphics and mounted equipment.
Fleet vehicles fail differently than private vehicles because they run duty cycles nobody at the factory really planned for. A transit bus opens and closes its doors 400 times a day. A refuse truck cycles a packer thousands of times a month. A bucket truck puts a boom load into a subframe every hour of every shift. The result is fatigue cracking at mounting points and load paths, not the impact damage you see on consumer vehicles.
We are set up for the size. The building at 23281 La Palma Ave in Yorba Linda is 35,000 square feet with bays and a booth sized for 45-foot coaches, which means a 40-foot transit bus or a ladder truck body fits without creative parking. San Clemente is about 45 minutes south on the I-5 or the 73, and we work with agencies and contractors up and down that corridor. All work is done in shop.

Every Type in This Category We Take
These variants come through the shop regularly. Each one fails in a slightly different place, so here is what we actually see on them.
- Shuttle buses
- Cutaway chassis shuttles fail at the seam between the factory cab and the upfitter body, because the two structures flex at different rates. Water enters that joint and rots the floor behind the driver. Entry door apertures round out from constant cycling. We rebuild the cab-to-body joint with new backing structure, correct the door opening geometry and repair the floor before it reaches the stepwell framing.
- Paratransit vans
- Lowered floors, wheelchair lifts and securement anchors mean original structure was removed and replaced with upfitter framing. The lift mounting takes cyclic load every trip and cracks at the floor attachment. We repair the conversion framing, rebuild lift and ramp mounting into reinforced structure, and verify securement anchor backing before the vehicle returns to service.
- Refuse and recycling trucks
- Packer bodies see thousands of compaction cycles a month and constant corrosive leachate exposure. Cracks start at the packer track rails and the body-to-subframe mounts, and the tailgate hinge structure elongates. We reweld and reinforce the mounting structure, replace corroded body panel sections and floor, and refinish. Packer hydraulics and cylinders go to your equipment provider.
- Street sweepers
- Hopper bodies carry wet abrasive load and corrode from the inside out, usually failing first at the hopper floor and the dump hinge brackets. Broom arm mounting also fatigues from constant road contact. We repair and replace hopper panel and floor sections, rebuild hinge and arm mounting structure, and recoat the interior surfaces that take the abrasive load.
- Bucket trucks
- The boom subframe transfers every lift into the chassis frame, and that interface is where cracks appear: at the outrigger pads, the turret mounting and the subframe-to-frame fasteners. We inspect and reweld the subframe and mounting structure, repair the body and utility compartments, and refinish. We do not service the boom, the insulating components or the hydraulics themselves.
- Utility trucks
- Service body trucks carry heavy tools in compartments that were designed for lighter loads, and the compartment floors sag while door frames rack. Crane and compressor mounting cracks the body floor and the subframe. We rebuild compartment structure, repair or replace service bodies from $2,500 to $15,000 installed, and reinforce equipment mounting into frame rather than body sheet metal.
- Water and sewer maintenance vehicles
- Jetter and vactor bodies carry large water and debris tanks whose load shifts constantly in transit, working the tank saddles and body mounts. Corrosion around the debris body and hose reel mounting is standard. We repair and reinforce saddle and mounting structure, replace corroded panel and floor sections and refinish. Vacuum systems, pumps and reels go to a specialty provider.
- Traffic signal maintenance vehicles
- Aerial-equipped service trucks with heavy compartment loads and constant curbside work. Failures show at the aerial subframe mounts, the compartment door frames and the roof rack that carries signal heads and mast arms. We rebuild the subframe interface, square the compartment openings so doors latch, reinforce roof rack mounting and refinish with agency markings.
- Forestry and parks vehicles
- Chip bodies, dump inserts and stake beds operating off pavement, with constant brush contact and abrasive load. Chip body doors and hinges tear, sidewalls bulge from overloading and deck structure rots. We repair and reinforce chip body framing and hinge structure, replace deck and sidewall sections, and recoat surfaces that take direct load and abrasion.
- Mobile command centers
- Large specialty bodies packed with generators, HVAC, antennas, mast systems and interior cabinetry. Generator vibration fatigues the floor structure it is bolted to, and roof penetrations for masts and antennas leak into equipment racks. We rebuild generator mounting with isolators into proper structure, reflash and rebed every roof penetration, then water test the body before release.
- Food trucks
- Kitchen equipment, propane, water tanks and generators in a box body that flexes constantly. The recurring failures are floor structure cracking under equipment mounts, service window frames leaking into the wall, and stainless and coved flooring damage that puts the health permit at risk. We rebuild equipment mounting, repair the body structure and restore the interior finish surfaces.
- Mobile medical clinics
- Exam rooms, imaging equipment and lift systems in a coach or box body, where equipment weight is concentrated and the interior finish has to stay intact and cleanable. Cracked floor structure under equipment and leaks at roof HVAC curbs are the common findings. We rebuild the structure, reflash the roof curbs, restore the interior surfaces and water test before the unit returns to service.
Our Fleet Scope: Body, Paint, Structure and Equipment
Everything we do on a fleet vehicle sits above and around the chassis rails. Body panel repair and replacement. Full refinish and fleet color standards. Structural repair including frame sections, body subframes and mounting structure. Equipment installation such as service bodies, racks, lighting, lift gates and reflective markings. That is the whole list, and it is deliberately narrow.
We do not do engine, after-treatment, transmission, differential or hydraulic system work. We do not perform DOT annual inspections. On an apparatus with a pump or an aerial, we do not service the pump or the aerial. We repair and refinish the body around them and rebuild the structure they mount to. Most agencies already have a specialty provider for those systems, and the two scopes work together cleanly when the line is stated up front.
The place this matters most is on a damaged vehicle where both scopes are involved. We will document what we find, tell you plainly what belongs elsewhere, and give you photographs and measurements so your other provider is not starting a diagnosis from zero. That is faster for you and cheaper than paying two shops to discover the same thing.
- In scope: body and paint
- Panel repair and replacement in steel, aluminum, fiberglass and composite. Full refinish, agency color standards, fleet numbering, graphics and reflective conspicuity markings.
- In scope: structural
- Frame section repair, body subframe and mounting rebuild, bus body post and roof structure, floor and stepwell structure, and correction of racked door and window openings.
- In scope: equipment install
- Service bodies, utility boxes, racks, toolboxes, lift gates, emergency and work lighting, siren and control head mounting, and cabinetry inside specialty bodies.
- Out of scope: mechanical
- Engine, after-treatment, transmission, driveline, hydraulics, pumps, aerials and refrigeration units. We repair and refinish around them but do not service them.
- Out of scope: inspection
- We do not perform DOT annual inspections or issue inspection reports. We will document body and structural condition in writing for your records, which is a different thing.
Bus Body Structure and Why It Cracks Where It Does
A bus body is a steel or aluminum cage of vertical posts and roof bows, skinned inside and out, sitting on a chassis that flexes underneath it. The posts carry the roof and resist rollover load, and the skin ties them together. When the body starts to fatigue, the cracks appear at the transitions: at the bottom of a post where it meets the floor structure, at the corners of window openings, and around the door apertures.
Door openings are the worst area on any transit or school bus, because they are large holes in the sidewall in exactly the place that takes the most cycles. Every door cycle loads the frame around it. Over years the aperture rounds slightly, the door stops meeting its seal evenly, and now the door mechanism is fighting geometry. Adjusting the door repeatedly is the classic symptom treatment.
Corrosion is the other structural driver, especially on coastal routes. Water sits in the bottom of the sidewall cavity behind the skin and takes the bottom of the posts and the rocker structure from the inside out. By the time you see a bubble in the paint at the rocker, there is usually significantly less structure behind it than anyone expects. We open it, cut back to sound material and rebuild rather than skinning over it.
- Post and rocker rebuild
- Corroded or cracked vertical posts and rocker structure cut back to sound material and replaced with matched section, then re-skinned so the load path is actually restored.
- Door aperture correction
- Openings measured for square and plane, framing repaired, then the door system reset so it seals on geometry instead of on repeated mechanism adjustment.
- Roof and bow repair
- Roof bows and header structure straightened or replaced after overhead strikes, with roof skin and hatch openings resealed and the body verified square afterward.
- Floor and stepwell structure
- Floor sections and stepwell framing replaced where corrosion and traffic have taken them, including the tread and edge trim that fails first in high-boarding service.
- Window and glazing frames
- Window frames rebedded and frames repaired where corrosion has started at the flange. On a bus the window flange is a common hidden water path into the sidewall cavity.
Emergency Apparatus and Municipal Vehicle Bodies
Fire, ambulance and police vehicles are built as a chassis plus an upfitter body, and the interface between the two is where the structural work lives. Ambulance modules mount to the chassis through a subframe and isolation system that has to allow frame twist without loading the box. When those mounts wear, the module starts taking chassis flex directly, and cracks show up at the module corners and around the compartment door openings.
Fire apparatus compartments are aluminum treadplate and extruded framing, and they carry heavy equipment on slide-out trays. Compartment floors sag, tray rails tear out of the framing, and roll-up doors bind once the compartment is no longer square. We rebuild the compartment framing and reset the tray rails into proper structure rather than into a fatigued extrusion.
Police units take a different kind of abuse: curb strikes, PIT contact, push bumper loading and constant equipment mounting and removal. The push bumper mounting into the frame is the item most often found cracked, followed by the holes left in the roof and body from prior light bar installations. We repair the structure, seal prior penetrations correctly and remount equipment into reinforced backing.
- Module subframe and mounts
- Ambulance and rescue module mounting systems inspected, worn isolators replaced and subframe structure rebuilt so the box stops taking chassis twist directly.
- Compartment framing repair
- Aluminum compartment framing, floors and slide-out tray rails rebuilt with proper backing, then roll-up doors reset against a square opening so they stop binding.
- Push bumper and equipment mounting
- Push bumper and equipment mounting structure repaired and reinforced into frame rather than sheet metal, with prior penetrations properly sealed rather than taped over.
- Emergency lighting install
- Light bars, perimeter lighting, scene lighting and controls installed from $400 to $3,500, on properly fused and protected circuits rather than spliced into existing harness.
- Agency refinish and markings
- Full refinish to agency color standard from $5,000 to $30,000 at 40 to 200 hours, with unit numbering, striping, decals and reflective conspicuity markings applied to specification.
Specialty Bodies and Electric Fleet Vehicles
Specialty vehicles are essentially a building on wheels, and they fail like buildings that get shaken every day. Mobile command centers, medical clinics and food trucks all carry heavy equipment, generators, water tanks and cabinetry mounted to a floor and walls that were never designed as structure. Cracks start at the mounting points, work into the surrounding panel, and let water in behind the finish.
Generators are the single most destructive item on a specialty body. Vibration from a mounted generator over thousands of hours will fatigue anything it is bolted to. We rebuild generator mounting into proper structure with isolators rather than resetting bolts into an already cracked floor, because the second approach fails again within a year.
Electric fleet vehicles change the structural picture. The battery pack is part of the floor structure, which means impact energy travels differently and there are areas where we cannot cut or weld. High voltage systems have to be isolated and verified before any structural work, and the pack enclosure and mounting need inspection after underbody or side impact. We do body, paint and structural repair on these. We do not perform battery or drivetrain service.
- Equipment mounting rebuild
- Generator, tank, compressor and cabinetry mounting rebuilt into proper structure with isolators and load-spreading backing so vibration stops destroying the floor and wall panel.
- Specialty body watertightness
- Roof penetrations for vents, exhausts, antennas, air conditioners and solar stripped, rebedded and flashed, then water tested in the rain bay before the vehicle leaves.
- High voltage isolation
- On electric vehicles the high voltage system is isolated and verified before structural work begins, and pack enclosure and mounting are inspected after any underbody or side impact.
- Interior finish and compliance surfaces
- Stainless, FRP and coved flooring surfaces repaired and replaced on food and medical bodies so the interior meets the finish requirements the operating permit assumes.
Fleet Scheduling, Cost and Getting Vehicles Back in Service
Posted labor is $210 per hour for body and paint, $260 per hour for mechanical and electrical, $285 per hour for diagnostics with a one hour minimum credited back, and $95 per hour for detail. Collision estimates are scheduled by appointment. For agency and fleet accounts we will do a yard walk by appointment and write a prioritized multi-unit plan with a sequence that keeps your service levels intact.
Realistic timelines: a panel repair with refinish is three to seven working days. A bus door aperture and post rebuild is two to four weeks. A full agency refinish with markings is three to five weeks. Structural work on a module or a compartment body runs four to ten weeks. Specialty body rebuilds vary widely and are quoted as scheduled projects.
We do not pull a vehicle out of service until the parts for its scope are physically in the building. On municipal work we understand purchase order and procurement timing and will hold a slot rather than starting a job that will stall halfway. What This Costs at Our Posted Rates
Body and paint labor is posted at $210 per hour. Mechanical and electrical is $260 per hour. Diagnostics run $285 per hour with a one hour minimum that is credited back against an authorized repair. Ranges below reflect jobs we have actually completed.

Do you perform DOT inspections or engine work on fleet vehicles?
No to both. Our scope on buses, municipal fleets and specialty vehicles is body, paint, structural repair and equipment installation only. We do not perform engine, after-treatment, transmission, driveline or hydraulic service, and we do not perform DOT annual inspections or issue inspection reports. We coordinate with your mechanical provider and share our documentation with them.
Our bus doors will not seal anymore. Is that a door problem?
Usually not. Door apertures are large openings in the sidewall in the highest-cycle location on the bus, and they round out over years of use. Once the opening is out of square, the door mechanism is fighting geometry and no amount of adjustment fixes it. We measure the aperture, repair the framing and reset the door system against a square opening.
How do you keep our fleet in service during repairs?
We sequence multi-unit work so you are down one or two vehicles at a time rather than a group, we confirm parts are physically in the building before a unit comes out of service, and we hold slots to match your procurement timing. Each unit gets a written in and out date with updates in writing whenever something moves.
What does a full agency repaint cost?
Full refinish and repaint to a fleet standard runs $5,000 to $30,000 at 40 to 200 hours of body and paint labor at $210 per hour. Fleet graphics, unit numbering and striping add $1,500 to $9,500 at 10 to 45 hours. We spray sample panels and verify against your existing units under shop light and daylight before committing to the whole vehicle.
Can you work on our electric delivery vans and EV fleet vehicles?
Yes, for body, paint and structural work. The battery pack is part of the floor structure on most of these, so impact energy travels differently and there are zones where we cannot cut or weld. We isolate and verify the high voltage system before structural work and inspect pack enclosure mounting after any underbody or side impact. We do not perform battery or drivetrain service.
Do you handle insurance and municipal claims on fleet damage?
Yes. We bill direct with every major carrier and we are set up for agency purchase order and procurement processes. Fleet claims move faster when the first submission includes structural measurements, corrosion documentation and photographs together. Insurance-billed work may be written at carrier-negotiated labor rates that differ from our posted retail rates, and we explain that before authorization.
