A trailer is a frame with things attached to it. Everything else on the unit, the walls, the skin, the roof, the doors, the deck, depends on that frame staying straight and staying welded. When a trailer starts showing symptoms that look cosmetic, a door that will not latch, a wall skin buckling near the front, a roof seam that opened, the underlying cause is usually that the frame has flexed, cracked or sagged and the body is reporting it.

That is the single most useful thing to know before you get a trailer quoted. A shop that reskins the wall and never looks under the deck will hand you back the same problem in a year. We put trailers on the lift and inspect the crossmembers, the main rails, the tongue and the suspension mounting before we write anything on the body.

We handle enclosed cargo trailers, toy haulers, open utility trailers and heavy equipment trailers for owners and fleets across south Orange County, from San Clemente and Capistrano Beach up through Dana Point. Everything happens in the shop in Yorba Linda, about 45 minutes down the I-5 or the 73, because frame work needs a lift, a flat measuring surface and a welding setup that does not travel.

Which Trailers We Repair and What Fails on Each

Trailer categories look similar from the outside and fail in very different places. What they share is that almost every failure traces back to load path: where the weight sits, how it transfers into the frame, and what happens at the point where two members meet.

Enclosed cargo trailers concentrate stress at the front corners and around the rear door opening, because the box is a stressed structure and the door opening is a hole in it. Open utility trailers fail at the tongue and at the fender and rail welds, since there is no box to distribute load. Equipment trailers fail at the ramp hinge, the deck crossmembers and the neck where a gooseneck or bumper pull transitions into the main beams. Toy haulers add the complications of a recreational unit: a ramp door that doubles as a patio, tie down anchors that pull, and a rear wall carrying loads the rest of the trailer does not.

Frame and Structural Welding Is Where Most Trailer Repairs Start

Trailer frames crack in predictable places, and they crack from fatigue rather than from a single event. Every mile you tow puts a load cycle through the tongue, the spring hangers and the crossmember to rail joints. Steel tolerates that for a long time and then it does not. A hairline crack at the toe of a weld becomes a two inch crack, and a two inch crack becomes a sagging rail.

The repair depends on what we find. A crack in sound material gets ground out, prepped and rewelded with a properly sized gusset or doubler that moves the stress concentration away from the original toe. A rail that has been cracked long enough to sag needs a section replaced, which means supporting the trailer, cutting out the failed section, fitting new stock of matching gauge and grade, and welding it in with full penetration at the splices.

Frame and structural welding runs $750 to $20,000 and above, across five to eighty hours. The bottom of that band is a tongue crack repair with a gusset. The top is a main rail section replacement on a heavy equipment trailer with the deck removed to access it. We will not weld over a crack without grinding it out, and we will not add a plate where the correct repair is a section replacement.

Bent or cracked tongues straightened or replaced, coupler mounting rebuilt, and safety chain attachment points restored to their rated capacity rather than tacked back on.
Crossmember and outrigger repair
Sagging or cracked crossmembers replaced with correctly spaced members. Point loading from equipment is the usual cause and spacing frequently needs to be tightened, not just repaired.
Suspension mount reinforcement
Spring hangers and equalizer brackets tear out of thin rail material. We reinforce with backing plates that spread load into the rail web instead of concentrating it at four welds.

Floor Replacement in Wood, Aluminum and Steel Deck

Trailer floors fail from the bottom up. Water gets between the deck and the crossmembers, sits there, and rots plywood or corrodes steel from a surface you cannot see without a lift. By the time a soft spot shows on top, the underside is usually worse. On enclosed cargo trailers the rot concentrates at the ramp threshold and along the outer edge where the wall meets the deck.

We replace in the material that suits the use. Marine grade or exterior rated plywood is the standard for enclosed trailers and takes coatings well. Aluminum tread plate makes sense where weight matters and chemicals or moisture are constant. Steel deck plate goes on equipment trailers that see tracked machinery and point loads that would punch through anything lighter. Whatever goes down, the crossmembers get inspected and repaired first, because a new deck fastened to corroded crossmembers is a wasted job.

Floor repair and replacement runs $500 to $9,500 across four to forty hours. E-track and tie down installation runs $250 to $2,500. Tie down anchoring is worth doing properly: an E-track section screwed into plywood alone will pull out under load, so we back it into crossmembers or add steel backing where the track lands between members.

Plywood deck replacement
Exterior or marine grade plywood cut to fit, sealed on both faces and edges, and fastened into sound crossmembers with the correct fastener pattern for the load rating.
Aluminum tread plate
Lighter and corrosion resistant, with isolation at every steel contact point to prevent galvanic corrosion where the aluminum meets the frame.
Steel deck plate
Welded plate deck for equipment trailers carrying tracked machinery and point loads, with crossmember spacing verified against the intended load before the plate goes down.
E-track and tie down anchoring
Horizontal and vertical E-track, D rings and recessed pan fittings anchored into crossmembers or steel backing rather than into deck material alone.
Crossmember inspection first
Every deck job starts underneath. Corroded or sagging crossmembers get replaced before new deck material is installed, because the deck is only as good as what it fastens to.

Wall and Roof Skin, Ramp Doors and Roll Up Doors

Enclosed trailer skin is thin aluminum or a fiberglass reinforced panel screwed or riveted to a light frame. It tears at the fasteners, dents from road debris and loading equipment, and separates at the roof seam where the trim and sealant have aged out. On a trailer that has been sideswiped or backed into a dock, the skin damage is usually the smallest part of the repair and the frame behind it is the real job.

Wall and roof skin replacement runs $1,000 to $15,000 across eight to sixty hours. We replace in full panel sections wherever we can rather than patching, because a patched seam in the middle of a wall is a permanent leak candidate and it will always be visible.

Doors are the other high frequency item. Ramp doors carry their load through hinges, springs and cables, and every one of those wears. Roll up doors bind when the track is bent or the drum spring loses tension, and the panel hinges crack where they have been forced. Cargo, ramp and roll up door work runs $400 to $5,500 across two to twenty two hours. On a ramp door that has been dropped, we check the rear frame and the hinge mounting structure, not just the door.

Panel section replacement
Skin replaced in full panel sections between structural members rather than patched, so seams land where the trailer already has a joint and stay watertight.
Roof seam and trim rebuild
Roof edge trim removed, old sealant stripped to bare material, fasteners replaced and the seam rebedded. The most common source of water in an enclosed trailer.
Ramp door hinges, springs and cables
Hinge pin wear, torsion spring fatigue and frayed cable replaced as a set, with the rear frame and hinge mounting structure inspected for cracking at the same time.
Roll up door service
Track straightening, drum spring retensioning, panel hinge and roller replacement, and bottom seal renewal so the door actually closes down onto the threshold.
Side and man door frames
Racked door frames squared in the opening, latch and strike reset, and seal profiles replaced so the door closes on the seal instead of being slammed against it.

Suspension, Axles and Brakes: Leaf, Torsion and Air

Running gear is the part of a trailer that fails at speed, which makes it the part worth being careful about. Leaf spring suspension is the most common and the most serviceable: springs sag, shackles and bushings wear oval, equalizers wear at the pivot, and hangers crack at the rail. Torsion axles hide their wear because the rubber cords inside lose rebound gradually, and the only symptoms are dropping ride height and uneven tire wear. Air suspension adds bags, a leveling valve and lines that chafe and leak.

Suspension service runs $400 to $6,500. Axle service and replacement runs $500 to $5,500. Brake service runs $300 to $5,500. The most common brake complaint we get is a trailer that pulls under braking or has no braking at all, and on electric brakes that is nearly always a magnet, a ground path or a corroded connector rather than a controller problem.

Surge brakes on boat and utility trailers are a different animal. The actuator is a hydraulic master cylinder inside the coupler, and it fails from corrosion, a stuck shaft or a failed reverse lockout. If your surge trailer drags on deceleration or locks up when you back up, the actuator is the first place we look, not the wheel ends.

Leaf spring, shackle and equalizer
Sagged springs, ovaled bushings and worn equalizers replaced as a system. Replacing a spring without the bushings and shackles just moves the wear to the parts you kept.
Torsion axle service
Torsion axles cannot be rebuilt. When the internal rubber loses rebound the axle drops and the tires wear on one edge, and the fix is replacement with a matched rate axle.
Air suspension
Air bag, leveling valve, line and fitting service on air ride trailers, including chafe protection where lines pass through the frame and around suspension travel.
Electric brake diagnosis
Magnet resistance, shoe and drum condition, and the full ground path back to the controller. A pull to one side almost always means one dead magnet or one bad ground.
Surge brake actuators
Coupler mounted hydraulic actuators that corrode internally, stick on the shaft or lose the reverse lockout. Common on boat and utility trailers that see salt air near the coast.

Wiring, Lighting and Rust Treatment on a Coastal Trailer

Trailer wiring fails at connections, not in the middle of a wire. Ground is the usual culprit. Most trailer lighting grounds through the frame at a single screw, and once that screw corrodes, the current finds a path through something else and you get the classic symptom of the left turn signal making the running lights flicker. We trace grounds first on every lighting complaint, and where a trailer has been through repeated repairs we will often rerun a dedicated ground back to the plug rather than chase a decade of splices.

Corrosion is the other constant, and it is worse for trailers living near the water. Salt air off the coast attacks the underside of a frame, the inside of a hollow tongue tube, spring hangers and every fastener that pierces the deck. Rust treatment runs $400 to $3,500 depending on how far it has gone and how much of the trailer has to be stripped to reach it.

Real rust treatment is mechanical first. Loose scale is removed to bright or tight metal, structurally compromised material is cut out and replaced rather than coated over, and then a converter, epoxy primer and topcoat go on in that order. Painting over active rust buys about one season and hides how much section the frame has actually lost.

Ground path repair
Corroded frame grounds cleaned to bare metal, protected and in many cases replaced by a dedicated ground conductor run back to the connector at the tow vehicle.
Harness and connector renewal
Brittle insulation, failed crimps and water filled connectors replaced with sealed connections and proper strain relief where the harness passes through the frame.
LED lighting conversion
Sealed LED clearance, stop and turn lamps that tolerate vibration and moisture far better than incandescent housings, with the correct grommets at every opening.
Scale removal and section repair
Rust removed to sound metal and any member that has lost structural section cut out and replaced. Coating over a wasted rail hides the problem instead of fixing it.
Coating system
Converter where appropriate, epoxy primer and a chassis topcoat applied in sequence, with attention to the inside of hollow members where corrosion usually starts.

  1. Drop the trailer in Yorba Linda

    Bring it loaded or empty, though empty is better for frame inspection. Diagnostic time is billed at $285 for the first hour and credited back when you authorize the repair.

Questions We Get Asked

My trailer frame has a crack near the tongue. Can it be welded?

Usually yes, but not by welding over it. The crack gets ground out to sound metal, often drilled at the tip to stop propagation, then rewelded and gusseted so the stress concentration moves away from the original weld toe. My trailer brakes pull to one side. Is the controller bad?

Almost never. A pull under braking on an electric brake trailer is one axle or one wheel doing more work than the other, which points to a dead magnet, a bad ground or a corroded connector on the weak side. We measure magnet resistance at each wheel and check the ground path back to the plug. Brake service runs $300 to $5,500.

How long will my trailer be in the shop?

A door repair, brake job or suspension service is typically two to five days. Deck replacement runs about one to two weeks. Frame section replacement with the deck removed, or a full reskin, runs three to six weeks. Steel and axle availability is generally good, so labor scope drives the calendar more than parts do on most trailer work.

Do you handle insurance claims on trailer damage?

Yes. We bill direct with the major carriers and we document trailer damage the same way we document an RV: photographs on the lift, measurements against specification and a line-item repair plan sent to the adjuster. Commercial trailer claims often involve a cargo or liability component as well, and we can supply the structural documentation your carrier needs.
