Short answer
Small campers concentrate every load into a few joints. Galley hatch hinges, A-frame panel hinges and birch ply cores carry it all, and they leak first.

Teardrops and A-frames are small, and that fools people into thinking they are simple. They are not. A teardrop is a monocoque: a wood or composite core skinned in aluminum or fiberglass, where the skin and the core work together as the structure. There is no separate frame inside the body. An A-frame is stranger still, a hard sided camper whose walls fold down flat and whose entire weather seal depends on hinge lines staying true across a span that gets folded and unfolded hundreds of times.
Because these units are monocoque or hinge dependent, damage that would be a bolt-on panel replacement on a larger trailer becomes a structural repair here. A dent in a teardrop galley wall is a dent in the structure. A tweaked A-frame hinge line is a permanent leak until the geometry is corrected. We repair both, and the approach is closer to boat and aircraft work than it is to conventional RV body repair.
What Fails on This Class, and Where
These are the specific failure points we see on this build type, not general advice that applies to every coach on the road.
- Galley hatch hinge fastener pull-out
- The continuous hinge along the top of the galley hatch is fastened into curved plywood or composite that flexes on every open. Fasteners loosen, holes elongate, the hatch drops out of alignment, and the bulb seal stops compressing along the upper edge.
- Water damage at the exposed plywood edge under trim
- Teardrop bodies close their outer edge with a trim strip over exposed plywood end grain. Once the sealant behind that strip fails, the edge wicks water along its entire length and the sidewall profile softens where nobody can see it.
- Skin dent with hidden spar damage
- The skin is structural on a monocoque teardrop, so an impact that leaves a shallow dent has usually also bent or cracked the spar behind it. Filling the dent leaves the shell soft and the filler cracks out along the same line within a season.
- Bent A-frame panel hinge from a dropped panel
- When a gas strut fails, a heavy folding roof panel drops on its hinge line in one uncontrolled event. The hinge bends, the fastener holes elongate, and the panel no longer lands square, which opens a permanent gap at one end of the ridge.
- Torsion axle mount corrosion on small frames
- Light trailers use bolt-on torsion axles whose mounting brackets attach to thin frame rails. Coastal storage corrodes the bracket to rail joint, and once it loosens the axle shifts slightly under braking and the body sits crooked over the fenders.
How a Teardrop Is Built and Why That Matters
A typical teardrop has a plywood or composite floor bonded to a light steel or aluminum frame, then curved sidewall profiles cut from birch plywood or a composite sheet, then spars running across between them, then a skin bent over the whole assembly. The skin is aluminum sheet on classic builds and molded fiberglass on many modern ones. Everything is bonded and fastened, and the outer edge is closed with a trim strip and sealant. That skin is doing real structural work in torsion.
So when a teardrop takes an impact, the correct question is not what panel to replace. It is how far the load traveled through the shell. We open the affected area, inspect the spars and the sidewall profiles behind the skin, replace any compromised wood with matched material, and then re-skin the section with a properly formed panel rather than filling and fairing. Filler over a dented monocoque skin cracks out within a year because the panel underneath is still working.
- Sidewall profile and spars
- Curved plywood or composite sidewalls with cross spars form the shape and carry torsion. Damage to a spar shows up as a flat spot in the skin curve long before anything cracks.
- Skin as structure
- The bent aluminum or molded fiberglass skin is not decorative. It resists twist across the whole body, so a dent and a filler repair leaves the shell soft in exactly the place it was damaged.
- Edge trim and hurricane hinge
- The outer edge is closed with a trim strip or a continuous hinge extrusion bedded in sealant. Screws pull loose over time and the edge admits water into exposed plywood end grain.
- Floor to frame bonding
- The floor bonds and bolts to a light frame. Water reaching the floor edge from a failed trim strip rots the perimeter and the whole body loses its connection to the frame at the corners.
The Galley Hatch and Its Hinge
The rear galley hatch is the defining feature of a teardrop and the single most common source of trouble. It is a large curved lid running on a continuous hinge, usually a piano hinge or an extruded hurricane hinge, sealed against the body with a bulb gasket, held open by gas struts. That hinge is a long line of small fasteners in a curved surface that is being flexed every time the hatch opens, and it lives on the back of the trailer where road spray hits it constantly.
The classic failure is that the hinge fasteners loosen, the hatch drops slightly out of alignment, and the bulb gasket stops sealing evenly along the top. Water then enters at the top of the hatch and runs into the galley. On aluminum skinned units the hinge also corrodes where dissimilar metals meet. Correct repair means replacing the hinge, rebuilding the wood or composite behind the fastener line where it has softened, resetting the hatch geometry against the body, and fitting a new gasket to the corrected shape.
A-Frame Panels, Hinges and Seals
An A-frame camper folds its two roof panels down onto the box, meeting at a ridge line when raised. Each panel pivots on a long hinge at the wall top, and the gable ends fold in. Every one of those hinge lines has to stay straight and every mating edge has to compress a seal evenly. If a panel is dropped, if a gas strut fails and lets the panel fall, or if the box racks from a frame issue, the geometry changes and the camper stops sealing at the ridge or the gables.
Diagnosis starts by putting the unit up on a level surface and looking at the ridge line and the gable closure with a light behind them. Gaps tell you which panel has moved. Repair may mean straightening or replacing a hinge, rebuilding the framing along the panel edge, or correcting a box that is out of square. Replacing seals on a camper whose geometry is wrong is a waste of money, and we will not do it without telling you the geometry needs correcting first.
- Panel hinge line straightness
- A long piano or extruded hinge along the top of each wall. Any bend or elongated fastener hole changes how the panel lands and creates a gap at one end of the ridge that no seal will close.
- Ridge and gable seal compression
- Panels meet at the ridge and against the gable ends on compressible seals. Even compression across the full length is the requirement, and it depends entirely on the panel geometry being correct.
- Gas strut and lift assist
- Struts hold panels partway through the fold. A failed strut lets a heavy panel drop, which bends the hinge and racks the panel edge framing in one event.
- Box squareness
- The lower box has to be square for the panels to land correctly. A frame issue or a rotted floor perimeter racks the box, and every seal above it then fails no matter how new it is.
What Small Camper Repair Costs
Body and paint labor is $210 per hour, mechanical and electrical is $260 per hour and diagnostics are $285 per hour with a one hour minimum credited to the repair. A galley hatch rebuild with new hinge, wood repair behind the fastener line, geometry reset and a new gasket typically runs $1,400 to $4,500. Aluminum skin panel replacement on a teardrop runs $2,500 to $25,000 and up depending on how many panels and how much core work is behind them.
Small does not mean cheap. Labor rates are the same and the work is finicky, with curved panels, continuous hinges and tight access. What is different is that total exposure is usually lower simply because there is less vehicle. Owners of well built teardrops from nuCamp, Bowlus, Oliver and similar builders generally find the investment worthwhile because the units hold value. On inexpensive imports the math sometimes does not work and we will say so.

Can you just fill and paint a dent in my teardrop?
On a monocoque body, no. The skin is structural and the spar behind the dent has usually moved too. Filler over a panel that is still flexing cracks out along the same line within a season. We open the area, repair or replace the spar and the sidewall profile, and re-skin the section with a properly formed panel.
Water is getting into my galley. Is that the hatch seal?
Usually it is the hatch geometry, not the seal. The continuous hinge fasteners loosen in curved substrate, the hatch drops slightly, and the seal stops compressing evenly along the top edge. We replace the hinge, rebuild the wood behind the fastener line, reset the hatch to the body, then fit a new gasket to the corrected shape.
My A-frame leaks at the ridge even after new seals. Why?
Because the geometry is wrong and no seal will close a gap that comes from a bent hinge or a racked box. We put the unit up on a level surface and look at the ridge and gable closure with a light behind them. Whatever moved gets corrected first, then seals go on. Selling you seals for a geometry problem wastes your money.
Do you work on small imported campers as well as US built ones?
Yes. We are an independent shop and we take small campers of every origin. The practical caution is parts. On many imported units components are unavailable domestically, so repairs shift toward fabrication, which changes the cost picture. We identify that at intake and give you an itemized number before anything starts.
