Short answer
Vintage coaches are wood framed under aluminum skin. The rot is behind the panel, the butyl at every rivet is dead, and parts do not exist. We fabricate.

A coach built before the mid 1990s is a fundamentally different object from a modern laminated RV. Most were stick and tin: a wood or light steel frame, insulation between the studs, and a thin aluminum skin screwed or riveted over the outside with butyl tape at every seam. There is no structural adhesive holding the panel to the frame, so the skin is not carrying much load. The frame is. That means a vintage coach can look perfectly straight and be structurally rotten, which is exactly what we find on most of them.
Restoration on these is a carpentry, sheet metal and chemistry problem more than a body problem. The butyl tape behind sixty year old trim has hardened to the consistency of a crayon. The window frames are cast aluminum shapes nobody has made since the Ford administration. The original Zolatone interior finish and the anodized trim are period specific. We handle all of it, and we are direct with owners about the fact that a real restoration on a vintage unit is usually an open ended scope that grows once the skin comes off.
What Fails on This Class, and Where
These are the specific failure points we see on this build type, not general advice that applies to every coach on the road.
- Rotted bottom rail and floor perimeter
- Water entering at a window or corner molding runs down inside the wall cavity and sits on the wood bottom plate. That member fails first, takes the floor edge with it, and the failure is complete long before anything shows on the interior paneling.
- Dead butyl at every seam and rivet line
- Original butyl tape behind trim and under skin laps hardens and shrinks after two decades. On a vintage unit every corner molding, belt line and roof seam is a slow leak, and resealing over the outside does nothing because the failure is between the layers.
- Corroded steel frame outriggers
- The small section outriggers supporting the floor edge sit exactly where water drains off the belly. Coastal storage eats them from the inside, and they are hidden by the belly pan, so nobody sees them until the floor edge starts flexing underfoot.
- Failed jalousie and crank window seals
- Louvered jalousie windows and old crank-out units seal with felt and thin gaskets that have long since gone. Water tracks along the bottom rail of the frame, into the wall, and rots the blocking under the opening on both sides.
- Gel coat chalking and unclearcoated aluminum oxidation
- Early fiberglass panels had no clear over the gel coat and bare aluminum was never coated. Decades of Southern California UV leave a chalked, porous surface that has to be cut back to sound material before any refinish will hold.
What Is Behind the Aluminum Skin
Pull the exterior trim on a 1970s travel trailer or a period Class A and you find vertical wood studs on 16 inch centers, horizontal blocking at window and door openings, and a wood or steel bottom rail sitting on the trailer frame. Fiberglass batting or foam fills the cavities. The skin is aluminum in long sheets, lapped and sealed with butyl, with a screw or rivet every few inches into the studs. The skin stiffens the wall in shear, but the frame carries the vertical load and the frame is what rots.
The rot starts at the bottom rail. Water enters at a window, a seam or a corner molding, runs down inside the cavity and sits on the bottom plate where it cannot dry. From there it moves up the studs and out along the floor. By the time an owner sees a soft floor near the door, the bottom rail on that whole wall is usually gone. Correct restoration means removing skin panel by panel, replacing every compromised stud and plate with matched material, and rebuilding the wall as a unit rather than patching from inside.
- Bottom rail and floor perimeter
- The lowest horizontal member in the wall sits where water collects. It is the first thing to rot and the most important thing to replace, because the wall and floor both tie into it.
- Window opening blocking
- Horizontal blocking around window openings takes the water that gets past a failed frame gasket. Rot here spreads sideways along the header before it ever shows on the interior panel.
- Butyl tape at seams and rivets
- Original butyl hardens and loses adhesion in fifteen to twenty years. On a fifty year old unit it has been dead for decades, and every seam and fastener is a slow leak path.
- Skin panel lap direction
- Original skins lap so water sheds downward. Previous repairs frequently reverse a lap, which turns a shedding joint into a collecting joint and rots the wall behind it in a few seasons.
Steel Frame Rust and Chassis Structure
Under a vintage trailer is a welded steel frame with main rails, cross members and outriggers, usually painted once at the factory and never again. Coastal storage accelerates the corrosion badly. The outriggers go first because they are the smallest section and they sit under the floor edge where water drains. Then the cross members near the axles. On motorhomes of the same era, the house structure sits on a truck chassis and the failures are the body mounts and the outriggers rather than the rails themselves.
We inspect frames with the belly pan off, not from a walk around. Scale gets removed, sections get measured for remaining wall thickness, and anything below serviceable gets cut out and replaced with new steel welded in with proper fit up. Then the whole assembly gets primed and coated. Doing that work well is what separates a restoration that lasts from one that looks good for two years, and it is invisible in every photograph anyone will ever take of the finished trailer.
Discontinued Parts and Period Correct Finishes
Nothing on a vintage coach is available from a parts counter. Hehr and Miller window frames, cast aluminum corner moldings, specific extruded drip rails, jalousie hardware, original latches and vents: all of it is either salvage or fabricated. We fabricate. We can roll and brake aluminum trim, machine replacement latch components, and cut skin panels to match original lap patterns. Where a piece exists only as salvage, we will tell you that and let you decide whether to hunt for it or have it made.
Finish work is its own discipline. Original exteriors were frequently painted aluminum with a baked enamel, and the correct look is not the same as a modern basecoat clearcoat with heavy clear. We can shoot a period appropriate single stage or replicate an original two tone with the correct sheen and the correct break line. Interior Zolatone multicolor finishes can be reproduced. We match to a documented sample from an unfaded area rather than to a photograph or a memory.
- Aluminum trim fabrication
- Corner moldings, drip rails and belt lines get rolled and formed in house from stock aluminum when originals cannot be sourced, then anodized or painted to match the surrounding assembly.
- Window and vent replacement
- Original frames are often unavailable. We either rebuild the existing frame with new glazing and seals or adapt a modern unit into the opening with a fabricated adapter flange.
- Period paint systems
- Heavy modern clear over a vintage body reads wrong. A period correct single stage or low sheen two tone matches how the coach actually looked and ages more like the original did.
- Zolatone and interior finishes
- Multicolor spatter finishes on interior panels can be reproduced. We pull a sample from behind a cabinet where the original never saw sun and match to that rather than to the faded visible surface.
How Vintage Scope and Cost Actually Work
Body and paint labor is $210 per hour, mechanical and electrical is $260 per hour, diagnostics are $285 per hour with a one hour minimum credited to the repair and detail is $95 per hour. On a vintage project we work in defined phases with a checkpoint between each, because pricing a full restoration up front on a fifty year old unit is guesswork. Phase one is disassembly and assessment. You get photographs and a written scope for phase two before phase two starts.
Realistic ranges: aluminum skin and sidewall replacement runs $2,500 to $25,000 and up. Water damage and subfloor work runs $750 to $15,000 and up. A full exterior refinish runs $5,000 to $35,000 and up depending on size and prep condition. A frame off, wall out restoration on a 25 foot vintage trailer is a six figure conversation and we will say so early rather than discovering it together at month four.

Questions We Get Asked
Can you get parts for a coach this old?
Sometimes, and when we cannot we fabricate. Corner moldings, drip rails, belt lines and skin panels get formed in house from stock aluminum. Window frames get rebuilt with new glazing and seals, or a modern unit gets adapted into the original opening with a fabricated flange. We will tell you which category each part falls into before you commit.
Why can you not give me a price for the whole restoration up front?
Because on a fifty year old stick and tin unit, nobody knows what is behind the skin until the skin comes off. We work in phases with a checkpoint between each. Phase one is disassembly and assessment, and you get photographs and a written scope for phase two before phase two begins. That way you control the spend at every step.
Is a vintage restoration worth more than the coach?
Frequently, yes, and we say that plainly. A full wall out restoration on a 25 foot vintage trailer is a six figure conversation. Owners who do it are usually doing it because of what the unit is, not because the math works. If your goal is a usable camper rather than a restored one, we will tell you where to stop.
Do you store the coach during a long restoration?
The unit stays with us at the Yorba Linda facility for the duration of active phases. All work is in shop. We do not run mobile service, and vintage work in particular needs a controlled environment because you are dealing with open wall cavities, bare wood and bare metal that cannot be exposed to weather.
