Keystone Repair
Keystone Fifth Wheel and Trailer Repair
Short answer
Keystone builds large fifth wheels that carry serious weight forward. Pin box and outrigger structure is what we inspect first on anything with miles on it.
Keystone owners near San Clemente bring Montana, Cougar, Alpine, Fuzion and Outback units to OCRV Center in Yorba Linda. We measure and weld frames, correct pin box and outrigger damage, rebuild racked slide openings, replace roof membrane and repair laminated sidewalls after impact or water intrusion.

Keystone Montana and Alpine units are full-time capable fifth wheels, and that is exactly the problem when they come in for structural work. A coach designed to be lived in gets loaded to its limit and stays there, which puts sustained rather than intermittent stress into the forward structure.
On any Keystone fifth wheel with real mileage, the first thing we look at is not the reported damage. It is the pin box mount, the forward outriggers and the frame at the axle hangers, because those are where a fully loaded full-timer shows fatigue first.
The Forward Structure Carries Everything
On a fifth wheel the pin box transfers vertical and lateral tow load directly into the frame. Every bump, every grade, every hard stop passes through that connection. On a unit loaded to its cargo capacity and left that way, the cumulative cycles add up faster than most owners expect.
What we find is fatigue cracking at weld toes on the forward outriggers and, less often, deflection in the main rails. Neither is visible from the outside. Both are straightforward to correct when caught, and both are expensive once the sidewall above has started moving with them.
- Pin box and kingpin
- Mount inspection and repair. Cracked or bent mounts are a safety item, not a cosmetic one, and they do not improve with time.
- Outrigger fatigue
- Frame and structural welding $750 to $20,000 and up. Cost is driven almost entirely by how much interior has to come out to reach the weld.
- Jackknife damage
- Front wall and pin structure. We have repaired Keystone fifth wheels that other shops called total losses, and we have also confirmed a few that genuinely were.
- Slide room load
- Long Montana slides put real load into the opening. Room rebuild and structural repair $1,500 to $7,500 when the opening has racked.
Fuzion, Raptor, Carbon and Impact
Keystone toy haulers are heavy, and the garage structure is doing work the rest of the trailer is not. Ramp door hinge lines, rear wall reinforcement and floor tie-down anchoring all take concentrated load.
We check all three on any toy hauler that comes in, and we tell owners honestly that a ramp door that has started to sag is a structural finding rather than an adjustment.
How a Keystone Is Put Together Above the Frame
Above the Lippert frame, Keystone builds vacuum bonded laminated sidewalls over aluminum framing with a composite backer on Montana, Alpine and Avalanche and a lighter recipe on Passport, Springdale and Hideout. The roof is a one piece membrane over crowned trusses, and on the upper fifth wheels the front cap is painted rather than gel coated. That single detail changes any cap repair from a color match exercise into a paint blend that has to carry into the adjacent sidewall panel to disappear.
Slide hardware follows room size. Short bedroom and wardrobe rooms use Schwintek in-wall gear racks that pinch and lose synchronization when the opening moves. Midsize rooms use Lippert rack and pinion under the floor. The long Montana and Alpine living room slides run on hydraulic rams and a power unit that also drives the landing gear on many builds, so a slide complaint and a jack complaint are frequently the same fault reported twice.
- Painted cap blending
- A painted Montana or Alpine cap cannot be spot repaired invisibly. The blend runs into the adjacent panel and the transition is planned at a body line. Color match blending $500 to $5,000 and up.
- Hydraulic power unit
- Shared pump for slides and landing gear on many fifth wheels. Low fluid, a failing solenoid or a chafed feed wire produces symptoms owners read as three separate problems.
- Axle and suspension
- Dexter axles with leaf springs and equalizers. Worn shackle bushings let the trailer rock enough to load the slide openings, and correcting the suspension is often part of a slide repair.
- Parts sourcing
- Mechanical hardware is generic and fast. Molded cap skins, specific painted graphics and discontinued window frames on older Montana units are the parts that set the schedule.

Keystone Questions We Get Asked
Does Keystone endorse or authorize OCRV Center?
It does not. There is no affiliation, certification or endorsement between Keystone and this shop, and we do not present ourselves as a factory outlet. We are an independent California BAR licensed facility, ARD00288521, that repairs these fifth wheels and trailers as a regular part of the work mix. Structural, roof, slide, paint and water damage repair does not require a factory badge. It requires the right tooling and honest measurement.
My Montana slide stopped part way out and made a grinding sound. What now?
Stop cycling it. On a Schwintek room that sound is usually a gear rack losing sync or a motor drawing hard against a binding opening, and forcing it strips teeth and turns a moderate repair into a room rebuild. On a hydraulic room it can be low fluid or a failing solenoid. An RV systems estimate is $150, credited against an authorized repair, and it includes putting a technician on the room with tools rather than looking at it from the aisle.
How do you check a Keystone frame for fatigue cracks?
We measure the frame against specification, then inspect the weld toes at the forward outriggers, the pin box mount and the axle hanger area, which is where a fifth wheel loaded to its cargo capacity and left that way shows fatigue first. Suspected areas get cleaned and dye checked. None of it is visible from outside, and finding a developing crack during a roof job is a far better outcome than finding it after a failure on I-5.
Can a jackknifed Keystone front wall be repaired or is it a total loss?
Both outcomes happen and the deciding factor is the pin structure and the main rails, not how bad the wall looks. We have rebuilt front walls and pin boxes on units another shop wrote off, and we have also confirmed that a few genuinely were beyond rational repair. You get a documented repair number with photographs and measurements so you can evaluate the carrier position with real figures instead of an opinion.
What does a Fuzion or Raptor garage floor rebuild involve?
Removing the flooring surface, inspecting the tie-down anchor plates and the floor structure they pass load into, replacing damaged decking and crossmembers, then reinstalling with an upgraded anchoring detail rather than reproducing the original. Floor repair and replacement runs $500 to $9,500. We also check the ramp door hinge line at the same time, since a sagging ramp and a moving floor usually accompany each other.
