Repair for Coaches That Spend More Time Parked
Short answer
Coaches that sit break differently than coaches that run. Expect seal and membrane failures, dead batteries and low speed collision, not worn out drivetrains.
Weekend owners put four thousand miles a year on a coach and store it the rest of the time. The failures that follow are storage failures: dried seals, cracked membrane, sulfated batteries, seized slide mechanisms and low speed backing damage. We inspect for those specifically rather than chasing mileage wear.

The most common thing a weekend owner says to us is some version of: it was fine when I put it away. It probably was. Storage damage does not announce itself. Sitting still in Orange County sun for eight months does more to a roof membrane and a set of slide seals than four thousand miles of driving ever will, and none of it is visible from the driveway.
The second most common thing is the discovery on the first trip of the season. The slide will not retract at a campground in Carpinteria, or the refrigerator will not switch to LP, or there is a stain on the ceiling that was not there in September. That trip gets cut short, the coach comes to us, and the repair is always larger than it would have been in March.
We are in Yorba Linda at 23281 La Palma Ave, roughly 45 minutes from San Clemente. Work is in shop only, no mobile service. The practical suggestion we make to every weekend owner: bring the coach in four to six weeks before your first trip, not the week of. Everything gets cheaper with that lead time.
Storage Damage Is a Different Failure Pattern
Rubber and sealant fail on a clock, not an odometer. A slide seal loses its plasticizer to UV and heat cycling whether the coach moves or not, and once it hardens it stops compressing, and once it stops compressing water gets past it on the first real rain. Lead acid batteries left without a maintainer sulfate in a season and never recover capacity. Tires age out at five to seven years regardless of tread depth, and a sidewall failure at 65 on the I-5 does far more damage than the tire cost.
The pattern we see is that weekend coaches arrive with four or five small problems that each cost a few hundred dollars, and one large problem that grew out of a small problem nobody caught. The roof lap sealant that cracked in year six let water into the ceiling in year seven and the subfloor in year eight. That is a $750 reseal turning into a $9,000 repair over two seasons of storage.
- Seals and sealant
- Slide seals, window frames, roof penetrations and body seams all rely on flexible material that hardens with UV exposure. Inspect annually. Reseal every three to five years in this climate.
- Batteries
- House batteries left unattended over storage sulfate and lose capacity permanently. A maintainer costs less than one battery. Expect replacement every three to five years on lead acid.
- Tires and dry rot
- RV tires age out before they wear out. Check the four digit date code on the sidewall. Sidewall cracking and flat spotting from long storage is a real failure risk, not cosmetic.
- Slide mechanisms
- Rack and pinion and hydraulic slides seize and go out of time when they sit for months. Cycling them monthly during storage prevents most of what we end up repairing.
- LP and appliances
- Refrigerator burners and water heater orifices collect spider webs and debris in storage. That is the single most common reason an appliance will not light on the first trip.
Almost All of Your Collision Damage Is Under 10 mph
Weekend owners rarely have highway accidents in an RV. What they have is a corner meeting a gatepost at a storage yard, an awning rail against a low branch at a campground, a rear cap and a bollard at a fuel island, and a mirror against a tree on a narrow road into a state park. Low speed, low drama and consistently more expensive than it looks, because a laminated sidewall does not dent. It separates.
That distinction is the whole reason to bring low speed damage to an RV shop rather than an auto body shop. A car fender absorbs and deforms. A laminated RV sidewall transmits the load into the substrate behind it, and the gelcoat scuff you can see is often sitting over eighteen inches of separated core you cannot. We tap and survey the area before quoting, so the number holds.
Bring It In Before the Season, Not During It
Our spring is brutal. February through May, every owner in south Orange County remembers the coach at the same time, and the shop fills with jobs that all need to be done before Memorial Day. Parts lead times get worse in that window, not better, because every other shop in the country is ordering the same slide seals and roof sealant in the same eight weeks.
If you can bring the coach in during the fall or early winter, you get faster scheduling, faster parts and a calmer conversation. If you find a problem in June, bring it anyway, but expect the calendar to be tighter and be prepared to hear that a trip in three weeks may not be realistic. We would rather tell you that in advance than have you learn it at a campground.
- Off season scheduling
- October through January is the easiest window for both bay space and parts availability. The same job booked in March can take twice as long in calendar time.
- Pre trip lead time
- Four to six weeks before a planned trip is the right lead time for anything beyond a basic service. One week is not enough for a job that finds hidden damage.
- Annual inspection value
- An annual maintenance service at $400 to $2,500 catches seal, sealant and appliance issues while they are small. Most of the expensive water damage we repair was preventable at this stage.
- What we will not promise
- We will not commit to a date we cannot support just to keep a trip alive. If a part will not arrive in time, you get that news early rather than the week before you leave.
What This Costs a Weekend Owner
The routine work is not dramatic. A full roof reseal of every penetration runs $750 to $4,500 depending on roof size and how much lap sealant has to be cut out and replaced. Slide seals are $400 to $3,000. House battery replacement is $500 to $5,500 depending on whether you stay with lead acid or move to lithium. An annual maintenance service is $400 to $2,500 depending on coach size and what it finds.
The expensive work is what happens when the routine work is deferred. Water damage with subfloor involvement runs $750 to $15,000 and up. Delamination repair runs $1,500 to $20,000 and up. Neither of those starts large. Body and paint labor is $210 per hour, mechanical and electrical $260, diagnostics $285 with the first hour credited to an authorized repair, and 7.75 percent tax applies to parts and materials only.

My RV sat for eight months. What should I have checked first?
Seals and sealant, batteries, tire date codes, LP appliance light off and slide operation, in that order. Those five items account for most of what strands weekend owners on the first trip. I scraped a corner backing out of storage. Does that really need a shop?
Usually yes, and usually for a reason you cannot see. A laminated RV sidewall does not dent like sheet metal. It separates from its core, and the separation extends well past the visible scuff. We tap and survey the area before quoting so the number reflects the actual repair rather than the visible mark.
When is the best time of year to bring my RV in?
October through January. Bay space is easier, parts move faster and nobody is racing a trip date. February through May is our busiest stretch because every owner in south Orange County wakes up at once, and parts lead times get worse in that window rather than better.
I have a trip in two weeks. Can you fix it in time?
Sometimes, for straightforward work with parts on hand. For anything that requires teardown or a special order part, two weeks is optimistic and we will tell you so rather than let you find out at a campground. Bring it in and we will give you a straight answer the same day we look at it.
