The refrigerator is the appliance that generates most of the calls, and it is also the appliance owners are most often given bad information about. An absorption refrigerator that will not cool is not low on freon, because it does not contain any. It contains ammonia, water, hydrogen and sodium chromate in a sealed steel loop, and when it stops working the question is never whether it can be recharged. The question is whether the cooling unit is dead or whether the problem is upstream in the gas, electric or control side.
That distinction is worth several thousand dollars. A refrigerator that is not cooling because the LP pressure is low, the electric element has failed, the circuit board has a bad relay or the flue is packed with soot is a repair in the hundreds. A refrigerator with a crystallized or leaking cooling unit is either a cooling unit replacement or a full unit swap, and now you are choosing between two real numbers instead of guessing.
The rest of the appliance list is more straightforward but no less worth doing correctly. Cooktops, ovens, microwaves and RV laundry all live in tight cabinetry with specific clearance, venting and gas or electrical requirements. Owners routinely fit residential appliances into RV openings without addressing the venting or the circuit, and the result is a unit that works for a season and then does not.
Absorption or Compressor: Two Refrigerators That Fail Nothing Alike
An absorption refrigerator has no moving parts in its cooling circuit. A heat source, either an LP burner or a 120V electric element, boils an ammonia and water solution in a boiler tube. The vapor travels through a condenser, mixes with hydrogen in the evaporator, absorbs heat from the box, and returns to the absorber to start again. It works quietly, it works on LP off grid, and it has two hard requirements: it must be close to level and it must have good airflow behind it.
Those two requirements explain most failures we see. Running out of level for extended periods lets the sodium chromate solution settle and eventually crystallize inside the tubing, which permanently blocks flow. Poor airflow behind the unit, from missing baffles, a blocked upper roof vent or a bird nest in the sidewall vent, means the condenser cannot reject heat and the box never gets cold in summer. Both are preventable and neither is repairable once the cooling unit has crystallized.
A compressor refrigerator, whether a residential unit or a 12V DC unit from Furrion, Dometic or Norcold, works exactly like the one in your house. It runs a sealed refrigerant loop with a compressor, and it is insensitive to level and much less sensitive to ambient heat. Its failure modes are ordinary: compressor start relay, thermistor, control board, door gasket, condenser fan. Diagnosis is faster and parts are usually cheaper.
- Absorption cooling unit crystallization
- Sodium chromate settles when the unit is run off level and blocks the tubing permanently. The symptom is a hot boiler tube with a cold spot and no cooling on either LP or electric.
- Ammonia leak signature
- A yellow green residue at the boiler tube and a sharp ammonia smell behind the fridge means the sealed loop has opened. That cooling unit is finished. No recharge is possible.
- Airflow and vent obstruction
- Missing baffles, a blocked roof vent, rodent nests or debris in the sidewall vent all prevent heat rejection. The box cools in winter and fails every summer afternoon.
- Compressor unit failure points
- Start relay, thermistor, evaporator fan, control board and door gasket. Ordinary appliance faults with ordinary parts, and diagnosis usually takes a fraction of the time.
- The level requirement
- Absorption units tolerate roughly three degrees side to side and six front to back while running. Parked off level overnight repeatedly is the fastest way to kill one.
Everything We Check Before Condemning a Cooling Unit
A dead cooling unit is the expensive answer, so it is the last one we give. Before that conclusion we work the whole chain. On the LP side we verify regulator output in inches of water column, check the burner orifice for spider webs and debris, inspect the flue for soot and scale, verify the thermocouple and the igniter gap, and confirm the flame is blue and stable rather than yellow and lazy.
On the 120V side we test the heating element for continuity and correct resistance, check the element circuit through the board, and verify the outlet behind the fridge actually has power, which surprisingly often it does not because a GFCI upstream has tripped. On the 12V side we test the control board relays, the thermistor position and reading, and the door switch. Control boards on Norcold and Dometic units are a known failure item and they fail in ways that mimic a dead cooling unit exactly.
Only when the heat source is confirmed good, the flue is clear, the airflow is correct and the box still will not drop temperature do we conclude the cooling unit is the problem. At that point we can usually confirm it physically: a boiler tube that gets hot at the base and stays cold above the crystallization point, or visible yellow residue and ammonia odor.
- LP pressure and burner service
- Regulator output measured in inches of water column, orifice cleaned, flue brushed of soot and scale, thermocouple and igniter gap verified. A weak flame will not cool a box.
- Electric element testing
- Continuity and resistance measured against specification, plus verification the element circuit is switched correctly by the board and that the receptacle is actually live.
- Control board evaluation
- Relay operation, error code history and thermistor input all checked. A failed board produces no heat on either fuel and looks identical to a dead cooling unit from the outside.
- Boiler tube heat signature
- A functioning unit heats progressively up the boiler. A crystallized unit shows a sharp temperature break where flow has stopped. This confirms the diagnosis physically.
- Box and gasket condition
- A unit that cools but never reaches temperature in summer is frequently a failed door gasket or a damaged interior fin, not a cooling problem at all.
Cooling Unit Replacement or Full Refrigerator Swap: How We Decide
Once a cooling unit is confirmed dead there are three paths and they are not equivalent. You can fit a replacement cooling unit to the existing box, which keeps the original doors, trim and cabinetry intact and is the least invasive option. You can replace the whole absorption refrigerator with a new one of the same footprint. Or you can convert the opening to a 12V compressor or residential unit and change how the whole system behaves.
Cooling unit replacement makes sense when the box, doors, hinges and interior are in good condition and the cabinetry is a difficult opening. Aftermarket cooling units are available for most common Dometic and Norcold models and the labor is a day or so of work. It is generally the lower cost route on a large four door unit where a complete replacement means modifying cabinetry.
A full swap makes more sense when the box has been leaking condensate into the insulation, when the doors no longer seal, when the unit has an old control board that is getting hard to source, or when the owner wants to leave absorption behind entirely. We tell you which of the three we would do on our own coach and why, with real numbers next to each.
- Cooling unit replacement
- The sealed loop is swapped and the original box, doors and trim stay in place. The best route when the cabinet opening is tight and the box interior is sound.
- Same footprint absorption swap
- A complete new absorption unit fitted to the existing opening. Straightforward when a current model matches the footprint, and less so on discontinued sizes.
- Compressor conversion
- Replaces absorption with a 12V or residential compressor unit. Requires an electrical plan, usually an inverter and often additional battery capacity behind it.
- Cabinetry and trim work
- A different footprint means the opening gets reframed and trimmed to match existing finish. We do that in house rather than leaving a gap and a filler strip.
- Vent and flue closure
- Converting away from absorption means the LP line gets capped and tested and the sidewall and roof vents get properly closed and sealed, not covered over.
What the Norcold and Dometic Recall History Tells You About Your Fridge
Absorption refrigerators have a long and well documented safety recall history in the United States, covering millions of Norcold and Dometic units across many model years. The underlying issue in most of those actions is the same: fatigue cracking in the boiler tube of the cooling unit, which releases hydrogen and pressurized ammonia solution onto a heat source. That is a fire mechanism, not a cooling complaint, and it is why the recall volume in this category dwarfs everything else on the appliance list.
The practical implication for you as an owner is that the serial number matters. Before spending money on any absorption refrigerator repair, it is worth checking your unit serial against the published NHTSA recall database, because a unit in an affected range changes what we would recommend doing with it. We will tell you what we find on the data plate as part of the diagnosis.
It also informs how we inspect. On any absorption unit that comes out for service, we pull it far enough to see the boiler tube directly and look for the yellow green residue, scorching, or a sooted flue that indicates the burner has been running rich against the tube. Finding that early is the difference between a planned replacement and a fire in a storage lot.
- Boiler tube fatigue

Residential Conversions and 12V Compressor Upgrades
Converting from absorption to a compressor refrigerator solves real problems. It cools faster, it holds temperature in hundred degree inland heat that defeats an absorption unit, it does not care whether the coach is level, and it removes the boiler tube fire mechanism entirely. It also creates an electrical dependency that has to be engineered rather than assumed.
A residential 120V refrigerator draws through an inverter whenever you are not on shore power. That means a pure sine wave inverter sized for the surge, a dedicated circuit, and a house battery bank with enough capacity to carry the unit overnight. On a stock coach with two lead acid batteries and no inverter, a residential conversion will leave you with a dead bank by morning. We size the electrical side first and quote the refrigerator second.
A 12V DC compressor unit is often the better answer for owners who dry camp. It runs directly off the house bank with no inverter losses, typically draws far less energy over a day than a residential unit on an inverter, and fits RV openings without cabinetry surgery. Furrion, Dometic and Norcold all offer them. The trade is usually a smaller box and a higher unit price.
- 12V DC compressor units
- Run directly off the house bank without inverter losses, fit standard RV openings, tolerate any parking angle and cool hard in summer heat. Usually the best fit for dry campers.
- Residential 120V conversion
- Larger capacity and lower unit cost, but requires a pure sine wave inverter, a dedicated circuit and meaningful battery capacity to survive a night off shore power.
- Electrical sizing first
- We calculate daily amp hour draw, inverter surge requirement and bank capacity before recommending a unit. Conversions fail because of the electrical plan, not the refrigerator.
- Mounting and travel restraint
- Residential units are not built for road vibration. They get bracketed, strapped and shimmed properly, and doors get a positive travel latch rather than a bungee cord.
- LP line capping and vent closure
- The abandoned gas line is capped and the system leak tested, and the exterior vents are closed and sealed to the same standard as any sidewall penetration.
Cooktops, Ovens, Microwaves and RV Laundry
Cooktop and oven work is mostly gas work. Burners that will not stay lit are usually a thermocouple, a dirty orifice or low regulator pressure rather than a failed appliance. Oven ignition faults on RV ranges are almost always the igniter itself, which weakens over time until it no longer draws enough current to open the gas valve. Both are inexpensive parts and both get diagnosed alongside an LP pressure check, because low system pressure will make a healthy appliance look defective.
Microwave and convection microwave replacement is dimensional work more than electrical work. RV cabinet openings are specific, the trim kits differ by manufacturer, and the circuit needs to be verified because a convection unit draws considerably more than the one it replaced. We check the breaker, the wire gauge and whether the circuit is on the inverter sub panel before fitting anything.
Washer and dryer installations in a coach need three things to work: a level and reinforced platform that will not walk under spin load, a vented or condensing dryer plan that matches the coach, and enough water and drain capacity that a load does not fill the gray tank. Vented dryers need a sealed exterior penetration with a proper hood. Condensing units avoid that but run much longer cycles and put more load on the electrical system.
- Burner and thermocouple service
- Orifice cleaning, thermocouple replacement and flame quality inspection, always paired with a regulator pressure check because low LP pressure mimics an appliance fault.
- Oven igniter replacement
- Glow bar igniters weaken with age until they no longer pull enough current to open the gas valve. The oven glows and never lights. A common and inexpensive repair.
- Microwave and convection fitting
- Opening dimensions, trim kit selection and circuit verification. Convection units draw more than the microwave they replace and often need the circuit confirmed first.
- Laundry platform and restraint
- Reinforced, leveled and secured so the unit cannot walk under spin. Plumbing tied into fresh supply and gray drain with proper venting and shutoffs.
- Vented versus condensing dryers
- Vented units need a sealed exterior penetration and a proper hood. Condensing units skip the hole in the wall but run longer cycles and add electrical load.
