Newmar Repair

Newmar Diesel Pusher Repair and Refinish

Short answer

Newmar coaches carry full body paint and high build quality. Matching a multi-stage Newmar finish is the hardest part of any repair we do on them.

Newmar Dutch Star, Mountain Aire, King Aire, Essex and Ventana coaches are repaired at OCRV Center, an independent shop in Yorba Linda about 45 minutes from San Clemente. We handle collision and structural correction, full body paint blending, slide rooms, hydronic heat and hydraulic leveling.

Newmar builds at the upper end, and the repair problem that creates is finish matching. A King Aire or Essex carries a multi-stage full body paint scheme with metallics, pearls and graphic transitions that were sprayed as a single continuous job at the factory. Matching a section of that in a booth is genuinely difficult work.

It is also the whole point of using a shop with booth depth for a 45 foot coach. Blending a Newmar scheme correctly means being able to spray the full panel and the transition into the adjacent panel in one pass, which is not possible if the coach does not fit.

Matching a Newmar Full Body Scheme

A repair on a Newmar is a paint job with some bodywork attached, not the other way around. The structural correction on a modern Newmar is often straightforward, because the build is solid and it measures well. The finish is where the hours go.

We spray-out and verify against the actual panel under the same light before committing, and we plan the blend to land at a natural break in the scheme rather than in the middle of a gradient. Full paint refinish runs $5,000 to $35,000 and up. Color match blending alone runs $500 to $5,000 and up, and on a complex Newmar scheme it lands toward the upper end of that.

Booth depth matters
A 45 foot coach has to fit in the booth for the blend to be sprayed continuously. Sectioning a blend across two sessions shows in the right light every time.
Multi-stage systems
Metallic and pearl layers have to be applied in the same sequence and film build as original or the color reads differently at an angle even when it matches head on.
Graphic transitions
Where the scheme changes color, the repair is planned to end at that break. Mid-gradient blends are possible and they are never as good.
Clear and cure
Controlled bake cycle for hardness and gloss consistency. On a coach this valuable, cure environment is not a detail.

AquaHot, Leveling and the Systems Side

Newmar coaches carry hydronic heat, often AquaHot, along with substantial hydraulic leveling and high capacity electrical. These systems reward maintenance and punish neglect expensively.

AquaHot and hydronic service runs $750 to $8,500 and up. Leveling system service runs $350 to $6,500 and up. Both are worth addressing while the coach is already in for body work rather than as a separate visit.

Spartan and Freightliner Rails Under a Painted Shell

King Aire and Essex sit on the Spartan K3 raised rail with independent front suspension. Dutch Star and Mountain Aire come on the Spartan K2 or a Freightliner XCR depending on model year and length. Ventana uses the Freightliner XCR, New Aire uses a shortened Spartan rail, and Bay Star, Bay Star Sport, Canyon Star and Kountry Star sit on the Ford F53 gas rail. Measuring any of them means datum points under the coach and a tolerance sheet from the chassis maker, not the coach builder.

Above the rails, Newmar bonds laminated sidewalls to a steel and aluminum superstructure and finishes the whole shell in multi stage paint rather than gel coat. There is no molded color to match. Every visible surface is a painted panel with a graphic scheme laid over it, and a one piece fiberglass roof caps the structure on the upper coaches. That construction is durable and it makes any panel repair a paint problem first, which is why the booth and the spray plan matter more here than the bodywork hours.

Basement structure
Pass through compartment framing carries floor load and takes damage in a side impact that never reaches the sidewall. It gets measured on any coach hit below the beltline.
Slide rooms
Hydraulic rams on the full wall rooms with a shared power unit. Room rebuild and structural correction $1,500 to $7,500 when an opening has moved out of square.
Parts and paint records
Newmar supports older coaches with build sheets and coach specific paint documentation, which shortens the guessing on a repaint. Molded caps and one piece windshields are the long lead items.
Air suspension and leveling
Ride height valves, air bags and hydraulic jacks interact. A coach that sits down overnight is diagnosed as a system rather than as one leaking bag. Leveling service $350 to $6,500 and up.

Newmar Questions We Get Asked

Is OCRV Center affiliated with Newmar?

There is no affiliation. Newmar holds no ownership in this shop, has not certified it and does not endorse it, and we would not suggest otherwise on a coach this valuable. We are an independent California BAR licensed facility, ARD00288521. What qualifies us for the work is booth depth for a 45 foot coach, certified welding, and the paint discipline a multi stage Newmar scheme demands.

Why does repairing one panel on my Dutch Star mean painting two?

Because the finish is paint rather than molded color, and a multi stage metallic or pearl reads differently at an angle if the film build or the layer sequence changes. Ending a blend in the middle of a panel or partway through a gradient produces a repair that matches head on and shows in raking light. Planning the blend to finish at a scheme break or a body line is what makes it disappear.

How much of a Newmar refinish is labor versus material?

Most of it is labor. Full paint refinish runs $5,000 to $35,000 and up, with body and paint labor posted at $210 per hour and paint supplies at $55 per paint hour. On a 120 paint hour job that is $6,600 of material against a much larger labor figure. California does not tax labor, so the tax line covers parts and materials only, which surprises owners comparing invoices.

Can you service the hydronic heating system while the coach is in for body work?

Yes, and combining them saves you a second trip up from the coast. Hydronic and AquaHot service runs $750 to $8,500 and up at our mechanical and electrical rate of $260 per hour. Typical findings are burner nozzles, fuel solenoids, coolant condition and zone circulation pumps. We do the systems work while the coach is already in the building rather than sending it back and scheduling again.

What happens to the graphics when a Newmar panel is replaced?

They get reproduced in paint. On these coaches the scheme is sprayed with masked transitions, not applied as vinyl, so the repair recreates the graphic on the new substrate and blends the transition into the adjacent panel. We photograph and measure the existing scheme, build masks from those measurements, spray out and verify against the panel under the same light, then commit. Color match blending runs $500 to $5,000 and up.
