Short answer
Sprinters are unibody, so structure gets measured and pulled, not panel-swapped. On a conversion, documenting the build is half the claim.

A Sprinter is a unibody vehicle, which means the body panels carry structural load. Correcting damage requires measuring against factory specification and pulling on a rack, not replacing a panel and hoping the geometry follows. Get that wrong and you get a van whose sliding door never quite fits again.
The second half of Sprinter work is the conversion. Roughly half the Sprinters we see have a documented aftermarket build inside, and on a claim that build is either itemized properly or valued at zero. There is very little middle ground.
Unibody Means Measured Correction
The failure mode we correct most often on previously repaired Sprinters is geometry. A rear impact was repaired cosmetically, the aperture was never measured, and now the barn doors do not seal and the sliding door binds on the track at one point in its travel.
We measure against spec, pull on a rack, and verify after. Collision repair and refinish runs $1,500 to $40,000 and up. ADAS scan and recalibration, which is required on any equipped van after structural work near a sensor, runs $285 to $1,800 and is one of the most commonly omitted lines on an outside estimate.
- Measured pulling
- Aperture and rail geometry checked against factory specification before and after correction. Doors that seal are the test, not panel gap alone.
- Sliding door systems
- Track, roller, latch and power components. $400 to $3,500. A binding door after a repair is a geometry symptom, not a hardware one.
- Rear barn doors
- Service and latch repair $300 to $2,500. Alignment is downstream of the aperture, so the structure gets addressed first.
- ADAS recalibration
- $285 to $1,800. Required, not optional, on any equipped van where a sensor sits behind repaired structure.
Documenting a Camper Conversion for a Claim
A carrier working from a standard guide sees a cargo van. It does not see the $42,000 of cabinetry, lithium, solar, insulation and plumbing bonded to the inside of that cargo van, and it will not unless somebody puts it in front of them with photographs and values attached.
We photograph and itemize the build as part of the claim package. Custom build-out work runs $5,000 to $80,000 and up, so the stakes on getting this documented correctly are substantial. On one recent 170 EXT rear impact, the corrected estimate after documentation was a different order of magnitude from the original.
The Sprinter Is a Chassis, Not a Finished RV
This page is about the vehicle underneath rather than any one conversion, because the Sprinter shows up in four different roles. It is a cargo or crew van in commercial service. It is the shell under Class B builds from Winnebago, Coachmen, Airstream and dozens of small converters. It is the 3500 dual rear wheel cutaway under Class C coaches such as the View, Navion and Prism. And it is a cab chassis under box bodies and specialty equipment. The body repair procedures are the same in all four cases. The valuation of what sits on top is completely different in each.
Generation matters as much as body style. The NCV3 vans, body code 906, ran through the mid 2010s. The current VS30 platform, body code 907, introduced different panel joining, revised high strength steel sections in the rockers and B pillars, and an electrical architecture with far more sensing. On a 907 the factory procedure specifies where a section can be cut and how the joint gets made, and improvising a weld through a high strength section is how a van ends up with a door aperture that never seals correctly again.
- Wheelbase and roof combinations
- 144, 170 and 170 extended lengths with standard and high roofs. Rear overhang length changes how a rear impact loads the frame rails and the barn door aperture.
- Factory joining methods
- Panel bonding, rivets and spot welds in specified locations. Replacing a bonded panel with a stitch weld looks solid, distorts the aperture and shows up as a door that binds at one point in its travel.
- Sensor calibration
- Radar behind the grille, camera at the windshield, ultrasonic sensors in the bumpers. Scan and recalibration $285 to $1,800 after structural work near any of them, and it is not optional.
- Two valuations on one claim
- The chassis has published repair times. The conversion has none at all. We estimate each separately so a carrier can settle both rather than valuing a camper as an empty cargo van.

Why does my sliding door bind after a repair somebody else did?
Because the aperture was never measured. A Sprinter is a unibody, so the body opening is structure, and a rear or side impact moves it even when the visible damage looks contained to one panel. A cosmetic repair leaves the opening out of tolerance, and the door track then binds at one point in its travel while the barn doors stop sealing. The correction is measured pulling on a rack, verified after, not a hardware adjustment.
Does the conversion on my van get valued separately from the chassis?
It has to be, and that only happens if somebody documents it. Carriers work from a database that has a record for a cargo van and no field for cabinetry, lithium, solar, insulation, plumbing and appliances bonded inside it. We photograph and itemize the build with replacement values attached and submit it with the estimate. Custom build work runs $5,000 to $80,000 and up, so the difference between documented and undocumented is very large.
Can you repair a cracked high top on a converted Sprinter?
Yes. Aftermarket high tops are molded fiberglass bonded and fastened to the cut roof opening, and they crack at the mounting flange and at corner radii where the panel flexes against a stiff steel edge. We grind back to sound laminate, rebuild thickness with cloth and resin, reinforce the radius, then refinish and reseal the flange. Fiberglass repair runs $750 to $12,000 and up depending on the extent of the crack pattern.
Do you work on Sprinter based Class C coaches like the View or Prism?
Yes, and those are two jobs in one vehicle. The Mercedes cutaway follows factory body procedures at the cab and the frame, while the house behind it is coach construction with a cab to house seam that takes load in any frontal impact. We measure the chassis against specification, address the seam over its full length, and treat the house structure as laminated construction rather than as sheet metal.
