RV Body Shop vs General Auto Body Shop
Short answer
A good auto body shop is right for your tow vehicle. RV walls are laminated composite, not sheet metal, and cap bonding and roof sealing are different trades.
A general auto body shop repairs steel and aluminum unibody structures with sheet metal technique and basecoat. An RV is a laminated composite house on a chassis, sealed at dozens of penetrations and up to 45 feet long. Different substrate, different adhesives, different measurement data.

Good auto body shops are genuinely good at what they do, and the trade has become highly disciplined over the last twenty years around published repair procedures, unibody measurement and calibrated refinish systems. None of that transfers cleanly to a motorhome, because the thing being repaired is not a stamped metal shell. It is a composite sandwich panel bonded to a steel or aluminum cage, carried on a chassis, and sealed against water at fifty or more separate penetrations.
The failure mode when the mismatch goes unnoticed is predictable. The visible panel gets repaired competently and the laminated structure behind it does not, so the coach comes back in eighteen months with a soft floor, a delaminated sidewall or a windshield that keeps cracking. We see three or four of those a year, usually with a clean invoice from a reputable shop attached. This page lays out where the two disciplines actually diverge and where they overlap.

Two Genuinely Different Structures
A modern car is a monocoque. Load paths are engineered into stamped panels and high strength steel members, damage propagates in documented patterns, and the manufacturer publishes sectioning locations, weld types and measurement points. A good body shop follows those procedures and the result is repeatable. That whole framework depends on the vehicle being a single engineered metal shell built in the hundreds of thousands.
An RV is a laminated composite panel assembly. A typical sidewall is gelcoat and fiberglass bonded to luan, then to a foam core, then to interior paneling, over aluminum or steel framing tubes, all pressed as one panel. Impact energy does not travel along an engineered load path. It breaks bond lines, and the separation keeps spreading outward from the strike point for weeks afterward. There is no published sectioning procedure, because the builder assembled 400 of your floor plan and never wrote one.
Substrate, Refinish and Why Color Match Is Harder
A car arrives with factory paint over an electrocoated steel panel and a paint code that means something. An RV arrives with 12 year old gelcoat that has chalked unevenly, or with a full body paint job that was itself sprayed over gelcoat, and the code on the sticker describes a color that no longer exists on the vehicle. Matching from the code produces a panel that is visibly wrong. Matching requires reading the actual aged surface and then blending rather than stopping at a body line.
Prep differs as much as color. Gelcoat requires different abrasive sequences and different primers than steel, and adhesion failures on RV refinish work almost always trace to prep rather than product. Then there are graphics. A 2011 coach carries a four color airbrushed swoosh that has been discontinued for a decade, so the only path is replicating it from photographs and measurements, masked and sprayed in sequence. That is a specialty skill with no equivalent in collision refinish on production vehicles.
- Read the surface, not the code
- We spectrophotometer the aged panel, spray test cards, and adjust. Paint codes on RVs describe the color the coach left the factory with, which after ten years of sun is not the color on the wall.
- Blend, do not stop at a body line
- On a 40 foot sidewall there often is no body line to hide a transition. The repair gets blended into adjacent panels, which is why partial refinish work runs $500 to $5,000 and up rather than a flat panel rate.
- Gelcoat prep sequence
- Chalked gelcoat needs a different abrasive progression and different primer chemistry than e coated steel. Adhesion failures on RV paint work trace back to prep far more often than to the product sprayed.
- Decal replication
- Discontinued multi color graphics get rebuilt from photographs and measurements, masked and sprayed in sequence or printed to match. There is no catalog part for a 2011 swoosh.
Sealing and Onboard Systems
The single biggest divergence is water. A car has a handful of sealing surfaces and a factory designed drainage path. A motorhome has a roof membrane, a termination bar along both sidewalls, air conditioner and vent flanges, a refrigerator vent, a skylight, awning rails, marker lights, a windshield surround, slide openings and a dozen sidewall penetrations, all sealed with products that have service lives measured in a handful of years. Any collision repair that disturbs one of those has to reflash it correctly.
Then there are the systems. A collision on the driver side of a coach can involve an LP line, a 120 volt circuit, a 12 volt harness, slide mechanism timing, leveling jack plumbing and a fresh water tank strap, in the same square footage. Those get pressure tested, load tested and cycled before the coach leaves. A general body shop is neither equipped nor obligated to verify a propane line, and nobody should expect them to be.
- Fifty or more penetrations
- Every roof and sidewall penetration disturbed during a repair gets cut out, cleaned to substrate, rebedded and reflashed. Smearing new sealant over old is the most common cause of a repeat leak.
- LP pressure testing
- Any repair near a propane line ends with a documented pressure test on the LP system. This is a safety verification, not a courtesy, and it is outside the scope of automotive collision work.
- Slide timing and alignment
- A side impact racks the slide opening. The room still cycles, so nobody flags it, and the seal fails within a season because it is compressing unevenly across the opening.
- Dual voltage systems
- Coaches run 12 volt DC, 120 volt AC, often an inverter and increasingly a lithium bank. Circuits through an impact zone get traced and load tested rather than visually inspected.
Size, Weight and the Equipment That Follows
Physical scale drives most of the equipment difference. A collision booth built for cars is typically 22 to 26 feet long. A 40 foot coach either does not fit or gets masked and sprayed in two halves, and a transition line across a sidewall is visible in raking afternoon light no matter how carefully it is done. Our booth takes 45 feet in one pass, which is the whole reason a full coach refinish can be done as one continuous sequence.
Weight follows scale. A diesel pusher can exceed 36,000 pounds and has chassis specific jack and support points that are not obvious, and getting that wrong bends something expensive. Yard geometry matters too: a truck with a 41 foot fifth wheel behind it needs room to maneuver without unhitching in the street. None of this is a criticism of a car shop. It is simply a different set of physical requirements that costs a lot of money to satisfy.

When a General Body Shop Is the Right Choice
Plenty of the time. Your tow vehicle belongs at a good auto body shop, and if the same accident damaged both the truck and the trailer, running them at two facilities in parallel is usually faster than waiting for one shop to do both. Cab sheet metal on a Sprinter, a bumper cover, a mirror, a hood, a door skin on a cargo van: all of that is straightforward automotive collision work and a competent shop will do it well and often faster than we will.
The line to watch is where the house begins. Once the repair touches a laminated panel, a molded cap, a roof membrane, a slide opening, a structural tube behind the skin or an LP or plumbing run, the discipline changes. If a shop offers to repair a delaminated sidewall with filler, or to bond a cap without measuring the opening behind it, that is the moment to get a second opinion. Questions We Get Asked
Can an auto body shop repair a delaminated RV sidewall?
Some can, most do not, and the tell is whether they talk about filler or about the bond line. Delamination is a bonding failure between the outer skin and its substrate, so the repair is either adhesive injection with vacuum clamping on an early separation, or skin removal, substrate replacement and relamination under pressure. Filler over a delaminated panel telegraphs and cracks within a season.
My carrier wants to send my motorhome to their auto body shop. Is that a problem?
It may be, and you get to decide. In California the owner chooses the facility. Ask the recommended shop three questions: how do you measure superstructure geometry, how long is your booth, and how many laminated sidewalls did you repair last year. If those answers are vague, that is a fair reason to choose differently. We can also review their estimate and tell you what looks missing.
Why is RV paint so much more expensive than car paint?
Surface area and access. A 40 foot Class A carries six to eight times the paintable area of a sedan and none of it comes off to hang on a rack. Masking includes the roof, windows, awning rails, slide seals, marker lights and every penetration. Add gelcoat prep and multi stage graphic replication and a full refinish runs $5,000 to $35,000 and up at $210 per hour plus $55 per paint hour in material.
Should my tow vehicle and my trailer go to the same shop?
Usually not, and running them in parallel is normally faster. Send the truck to a good auto body shop and the trailer here. Both carriers handle it as one claim with two facilities, which is routine. We coordinate on documentation if the damage on both units came from the same event, since the trailer damage often explains what happened to the truck.
What happens if a coach was repaired incorrectly by a general shop?
We inspect and report before quoting anything. The usual findings are unmeasured structure behind a bonded cap, filler over delamination, sealant smeared over old sealant instead of reflashed penetrations, and slide openings never checked for square. Some of that is correctable without redoing the cosmetic work. Some of it is not. We will tell you which category you are in before you spend money twice.
