Short answer

EPDM is a rubber sheet that chalks heavily, patches easily and lasts ten to fifteen years. TPO is a thermoplastic sheet with heat welded seams that lasts twelve to twenty. Fiberglass is a molded laminate panel that outlives both and cracks rather than tears.

The three materials on RV roofs behave differently enough that using the wrong product on one of them is a common and expensive mistake. In the table below, the first data column describes EPDM, the second describes TPO, and fiberglass notes are folded into each row label, because a two column table is easier to read than a three column one on a phone. Everything here is about the material rather than about our shop.

The practical reason to know which one you have is coating. A liquid rubber system that performs beautifully on EPDM can fail to bond to TPO, and neither belongs on fiberglass without the correct primer. Coating failures we see are almost never product defects. They are chemistry mismatches or prep shortcuts. So start by identifying the material, then choose a repair or maintenance approach that the material actually supports.

How to Tell Which Roof You Have

EPDM announces itself with chalk. Rub the surface with a wet finger and it comes back dirty white or gray, and the sidewalls below the drip edge usually carry gray streaks from years of runoff. Seams are taped and sealed, and the surface feels slightly soft and grippy underfoot because the sheet follows the decking closely. Most travel trailers and fifth wheels built before roughly 2015 and a large share built since carry EPDM.

TPO reads brighter and slicker. It does not chalk meaningfully, the seams are heat welded rather than taped, and it feels firmer under a hand or a foot. Fiberglass is unmistakable once you look: it is a molded laminate panel with no seams across the field, it is hard, it sounds different when you tap it, and it is usually found on higher end Class A coaches and some fifth wheels. EPDM: Rubber Sheet, Chalky, Easy to Repair

EPDM is a synthetic rubber sheet, typically 45 to 60 mil, adhered to the roof decking with a contact or water based adhesive and mechanically terminated at the sidewalls. It is the least expensive membrane to replace, the most forgiving to patch in the field, and the most widely supported by coating products. The chalking is not a defect, it is the sheet sacrificing its surface to ultraviolet exposure, which is also why the runoff stains the sidewalls.

The two age related failures are shrinkage and surface loss. EPDM shrinks over a decade or more, which pulls the sheet at the termination bars and around penetrations, and eventually the sheet is dimensionally short of where it needs to be. At that point coating does not help, because the problem is mechanical attachment rather than waterproofing. Service life is generally ten to fifteen years in Southern California sun, and shorter on a coach that lives outdoors year round without coating.

Field repairs are straightforward
A puncture or tear gets patched with membrane specific adhesive and matching material. No special equipment, and a properly prepped EPDM patch is a permanent repair rather than a stopgap.

Most acrylic and liquid rubber roof systems are formulated with EPDM in mind, which makes recoat and reseal at $750 to $4,500 and up a genuinely effective way to extend service life.
Shrinkage is the end of life signal
When the sheet has pulled away from a termination bar or lifted at the edge, replacement is the answer. Coating a shrunken membrane addresses waterproofing while ignoring the attachment failure.

TPO: Thermoplastic Sheet, Welded Seams, Longer Life

TPO is a thermoplastic polyolefin sheet, adhered like EPDM but with seams heat welded instead of taped, which produces a joint that is effectively as strong as the sheet itself. It does not chalk in any meaningful way, so it stays white longer and does not streak the sidewalls, and it reflects more heat, which is a real comfort difference on a coach parked in Southern California in August. Service life is generally twelve to twenty years.

The tradeoffs are repair and coating. Patching TPO properly means heat welding with the right equipment and technique, so a roadside adhesive patch is a temporary measure rather than a repair. Late in life TPO tends to get brittle and craze rather than shrink, and a crazed sheet is not a coating candidate. Compatible coating products exist but the list is shorter and primer selection matters more, which is where most TPO coating failures come from.

Fiberglass: Molded Panel, Longest Life, Different Repairs

A fiberglass roof is not a membrane at all. It is a molded laminate panel, usually one piece across the field, bonded to the roof structure. It is the heaviest of the three, the most expensive to replace, and by a wide margin the longest lived, with twenty years or more being normal and much longer being common on a coach that gets its penetrations maintained. It also walks better than either membrane because it does not deflect with the decking underneath.

Repairs are laminate work rather than sheet work. A crack gets ground out to a V, rebuilt with glass and resin, refaired and refinished, and the finish has to be blended into surrounding gelcoat that has aged. That is fiberglass cap repair technique applied to a roof, and it runs $750 to $12,000 depending on extent. The failure to watch on a fiberglass roof is stress cracking at penetration corners and along the cap seams, because a hard panel concentrates flex load at its openings.

Longest service life
Twenty years and up is normal, and the limiting factor is almost always penetration sealant rather than the panel itself. Annual seal inspection is what determines whether it reaches thirty.

Coating needs specific primer
Fiberglass does not accept EPDM oriented coatings directly. Adhesion requires the correct primer over properly abraded gelcoat, and skipping that step is why coatings peel off fiberglass in sheets.

Full panel replacement on a fiberglass roof is a major operation and sits at the top of the $3,500 to $18,000 band or beyond. Most fiberglass roofs get repaired rather than replaced.

Coating Compatibility, Cost and What We Recommend

If a coach is due for replacement and the owner has a choice, we generally recommend TPO for a unit that will be stored outdoors and not coated, and EPDM for a unit where the owner intends to maintain it on a coating cycle or wants the lowest replacement cost. Both are correct answers. Fiberglass is rarely a retrofit decision, because it is a structural panel rather than a covering, so in practice you keep and maintain the fiberglass roof you have.

On cost, expect the lower half of the $3,500 to $18,000 replacement band for EPDM on a 30 to 40 foot coach with sound decking, and the upper half for TPO on the same coach. Recoat and reseal runs $750 to $4,500 and up on either membrane. What blows past those bands is decking, not the sheet. Every soft square foot found once the old membrane is off is real carpentry, and that is where a roof job becomes a water damage job.

Identify before you buy product
Chalk test, seam inspection and surface feel take two minutes and prevent the most common coating failure, which is applying an EPDM formulated system over TPO or bare gelcoat.
Primer is not optional
On TPO and fiberglass the primer does the adhesion work. Skipping it produces a roof that looks correct for one summer and then peels in sheets, taking your money with it.
Cure windows are chemistry
Each coating layer needs its stated cure time. This is why a recoat is three to six days in a shop rather than a weekend in a driveway between two rain forecasts.
Decking sets the real cost
Membrane choice moves the number by a few thousand dollars. Soft decking moves it by five figures, which is why the moisture survey matters more than the material debate.

How do I know if I have EPDM or TPO?

Wet a finger and rub the surface. If it comes back chalky white or gray, it is EPDM, and the gray streaks down your sidewalls confirm it. TPO does not chalk, feels slicker and firmer, and its seams are heat welded rather than taped. Fiberglass is hard, has no seams across the field and taps solid. Is TPO better than EPDM?

It generally lasts longer, twelve to twenty years against ten to fifteen, and it stays white instead of chalking and streaking your sidewalls. EPDM is cheaper to replace and much easier to patch, and it accepts a wider range of coatings, which makes a maintenance cycle simpler. If you plan to coat and maintain, EPDM is fine. If you want to install and leave it alone, TPO is the better answer.

Can I coat a TPO or fiberglass roof?

Yes, with the correct system and primer, and that qualification is doing all the work in that sentence. Fewer coating products are formulated for TPO, and fiberglass needs properly abraded gelcoat plus a compatible primer before anything else goes down. Most coating failures we are asked to fix are chemistry mismatches or skipped primer, not defective product. Identify the material first, then choose the system.

Can I switch my coach from EPDM to TPO?

Yes. Membrane replacement removes the old sheet entirely, so choosing a different membrane type at that point is straightforward and the cost difference is modest against the total. What you cannot practically do is convert a membrane roof to fiberglass, because a fiberglass roof is a molded structural panel bonded to the roof framing rather than a covering laid over decking.

Does membrane type change how often I need to reseal?

Barely. Penetration sealant is a different product from the membrane and it fails on its own schedule, roughly every three to eight years in Southern California sun regardless of what the sheet is made of. Air conditioner flanges, vents, the skylight and the termination bars need annual inspection on all three roof types. That inspection is the single highest value maintenance item on any RV.
