The First Nine Minutes of an Adjuster RV Walkaround

Short answer

Adjusters walk a damaged coach in a fixed order. Point of impact, then panel gaps, then the roof seam. What they miss on that pass becomes your supplement fight.

An RV adjuster typically spends nine to fifteen minutes on a first inspection. They photograph the strike point, sight down the sidewall for gap changes, check the roof seam at the nearest corner, then write from those images. Anything behind a panel is not in that first number.

I have stood next to a lot of adjusters while they walked a damaged motorhome, and the pattern almost never changes. They arrive with a tablet, a tape, and a claim number that already has a reserve attached to it. That reserve is a guess made by someone who has never seen the coach. The adjuster is there to confirm or move it, and they have another four inspections scheduled that day. Understanding what they are doing with those nine minutes is the difference between a claim that pays and a claim that stalls.

None of this is bad faith. An appraiser working general property and casualty may see three motorhomes a year. They know cars. A laminated sidewall, a slide opening, a roof membrane termination bar: these are not things they touch often, and the estimating software they use was built around unibody automobiles. The gaps in that first estimate are structural to the system, not personal.

What follows is the order I actually see them work, stop by stop, and what each stop determines about your payout. If you can be present for that inspection, and I strongly suggest you are, knowing the sequence lets you put the right thing in front of them at the right moment.

Stop One: The Strike Point and the Wide Shot

The first two photographs are almost always a wide shot of the whole vehicle from a corner angle and a tight shot of the damage. The wide shot exists to prove the vehicle identity and general condition. The tight shot is what the desk reviewer will actually look at when they approve or question the estimate weeks later. If that tight photo is taken in flat overcast light, which is most mornings in coastal Orange County, a lot of surface deformation simply will not read.

This is the single easiest place to help your own claim. Raking light across a fiberglass panel at a low angle shows waves and stress cracks that a straight-on photo flattens out. I keep a work light in the intake bay for exactly this reason. When an adjuster comes to look at a coach here, we light the panel from the side before they shoot it, because a crack they can see is a crack that gets written.

The other thing that happens at stop one is a decision about drivability. If the coach rolled in under its own power, the adjuster mentally files it as repairable and moves on. That mental file is hard to reopen later. A coach with a bent rail that still drives straight enough to get to the shop can carry a much larger repair than its first impression suggests.

Raking light
A light source at 15 to 25 degrees off the panel surface reveals oil canning, stress cracks and lamination waves that flat frontal lighting hides completely.
Scale reference
A tape or a ruler in frame turns a vague dent photo into a measurable one. Desk reviewers approve measurable damage far faster than they approve described damage.
Drivability impression
Whether the coach arrived on its own wheels shapes the adjuster assumption about structural depth before a single measurement is taken.
Condition photos
Pre-existing chalking, old sealant or curb rash gets photographed at this stop and may later be used to argue betterment on a refinish line.

Stop Two: Sighting Down the Sidewall for Gap Change

The second thing a competent RV adjuster does is walk to the front corner and sight down the length of the sidewall. They are looking for two things: a change in the reflection line that indicates the wall is no longer flat, and a change in the gap around any opening. Compartment doors, entry doors and slide openings are the tell. On a body that has moved, those gaps go from parallel to tapered, and the taper is visible from twenty feet away if you know to look for it.

A gap that measures 6 millimeters at the top of a compartment door and 11 millimeters at the bottom is not a cosmetic complaint. It means the opening racked. That opening racked because the structure around it moved, and structure that moved has to be measured, not eyeballed. This is where a general auto appraiser and an RV shop will diverge sharply, and it is worth having the measurement in hand before the conversation happens.

I take gap readings with feeler gauges at four points on every opening in the damage quadrant and write them on a diagram. It takes about twenty minutes. It converts a disagreement about whether the wall moved into a table of numbers, and numbers survive a desk review in a way that opinions do not.

Stop Three: The Roof Seam, If They Go Up At All

Roughly half the adjusters I have worked with will get on a coach roof. The other half will not, for entirely reasonable liability reasons, and will write the roof from ground photos or from your photos. That is where the largest single category of missed damage lives, because the roof to sidewall termination is the first joint to open under a torsional load and the last place anybody looks.

The mechanism is simple. A side impact or a hard corner strike twists the box. The roof membrane is bonded to the roof deck and mechanically captured at the edge under a termination bar bedded in sealant. Twist the box and that bar rotates fractionally away from the wall. The sealant bead skins over and looks intact from the ground. Water finds it in the second or third rainy season, and by then the claim is closed and the subfloor has already gone soft.

If the adjuster is not going up, get up there yourself or ask the shop to document it. Photographs of the termination bar every four feet along the affected side, plus close shots of every roof penetration within the impact quadrant, cost nothing and can be worth several thousand dollars of covered work later.

Termination bar rotation
The aluminum bar capturing the membrane edge rotates away from the sidewall under torsional load. A 1 millimeter lift is enough to admit water and is invisible from grade.
Sealant skinning
Self-leveling sealant cures a surface skin that bridges a crack underneath. It looks continuous and is not. Pressing it with a thumb tells you more than looking at it.
Penetration inventory
Vents, antennas, solar mounts, refrigerator stacks and AC gaskets in the impact quadrant should each get a named photograph so they can be itemized on the reseal line.
Ladder and rack anchors
Rear ladder mounts and roof rack feet transfer impact load directly into the wall structure and frequently crack the substrate around the fastener pattern.
Membrane stretch marks
A pattern of fine diagonal lines in EPDM or TPO near a corner indicates the deck below flexed. That is a structural finding, not a cosmetic one.

What the First Estimate Structurally Cannot Include

The first estimate is written from the outside of a closed box. On a laminated coach, the outside is a 0.070 inch fiberglass skin bonded to a luan sheet, bonded to block foam, bonded to an aluminum or steel tube cage. Impact energy passes through all four layers. Only the first one is visible. When we pull a panel on a job that was written at $7,400 from photographs, the number after teardown lands somewhere between two and four times that on a regular basis, and that is not an exaggeration for effect. It is the arithmetic of a hidden structure.

That is why the supplement process exists and why it is normal rather than adversarial. The mistake owners make is treating the first number as the offer. It is a placeholder written under conditions that made a complete number impossible. The useful question is not whether the first estimate is right. It is whether the shop is going to tear the vehicle down and document what is actually there.

Teardown authorization is its own small negotiation. Some carriers approve a few hours of exploratory labor readily. Others want a repair plan first, which is circular. Standing There While It Happens

You are allowed to be present for the inspection, and you should be. Not to argue. To answer questions and to point at things. An adjuster who is told, calmly, that the slide has been binding since the impact will write a line to check the slide. An adjuster who is not told will not, because the slide cycled fine on the day they looked at it.

Bring three things. A short written list of everything you noticed that changed after the incident, in plain language. Photographs from the scene if you have them, including the other vehicle or the object struck. Your maintenance records, especially any recent roof reseal or sealant service, because those preempt the betterment argument before it starts.

Then stop talking. Speculation about what might be wrong underneath reads as an owner inflating a claim, even when the speculation is correct. Let the observations be observations and let the shop supply the structural argument with photographs and measurements attached. That division of labor works. In California you also choose the repair facility, so if the adjuster suggests a general body shop that has never sectioned a laminated wall, declining is entirely within your rights.

Change list
A dated list of behaviors that changed after the incident: new noises, doors that stick, a slide that hesitates, water where there was none.
Scene evidence
Photographs of the other vehicle, the road debris, or the object struck establish impact direction and energy, which supports structural findings later.
Service records
Proof of recent sealant maintenance or roof service removes the argument that a leak predates the loss and blocks a depreciation deduction on the reseal line.
Shop selection
California law leaves the facility choice with the vehicle owner. A carrier may recommend a program shop but cannot require one.

Why is the adjuster estimate so much lower than the shop estimate?

Because it was written from the outside of a closed structure. A laminated RV wall is fiberglass over luan over foam over a metal cage, and impact energy travels through all four layers while only the first is visible. Teardown routinely doubles or triples a photograph-based number. That difference is what the supplement process exists to resolve, and it is normal rather than a dispute.

What photographs should I take before the adjuster arrives?

Shoot the damage with a light source raked across the panel at a low angle, include a tape measure in frame for scale, and photograph every roof penetration and the termination bar along the affected side. Add scene photographs of the other vehicle or the object struck. Date-stamped images taken before any cleanup are the most useful evidence you will ever produce.

Can the adjuster refuse to approve teardown labor?

They can decline an open-ended exploratory request, which is why we scope it as specific hours against specific panels rather than as a blank line. Body labor is posted at $210 per hour, so a defined four to eight hour teardown is easy to quantify in advance. Most carriers approve a bounded teardown once they understand it prevents a larger revision later.
