Body work on an RV is not the same trade as body work on a car, and the difference is the substrate. A car fender is a single formed steel panel you can pull, fill and refinish. An RV sidewall is a bonded sandwich: gelcoat or painted fiberglass on the outside, then a fiberglass mat, then luan plywood, then block foam, then an aluminum or steel frame, then an interior wall panel. Push on it and the layers separate. Pull on it and they separate faster.

That is why a dent that would be a two hour job on a pickup can be a two day job on a Class A, and why a shop that has only worked on cars will guess wrong on both the method and the number. Everything we do on the body side is built around not breaking the bond between those layers, because once lamination lets go the repair stops being body work and becomes a panel replacement.

## Where Body Work Ends and Structural Work Begins

The line we draw is simple: if the aluminum or steel cage behind the skin is still in factory geometry, it is body work. If the cage moved, the opening racked, or the chassis rails deflected, it is structural, it needs measurement against factory specification, and it goes on a different work order at a different price. Owners are sometimes disappointed to hear that, because body numbers are smaller. Skipping the distinction is worse. A skin repaired over a bent cage looks correct for a season and then telegraphs every flex point back through the finish.

Telling the two apart takes a few minutes with the right access. We check whether doors and compartment doors still latch with even gaps, whether slide rooms seat square in their openings, whether the roof line reads straight along its length, and whether the seams at the cap joints have opened anywhere. If all four check out, the damage stopped at the skin.

When it does not check out, we tell you before you have paid for body labor that will need to come back off. It is a five figure conversation nobody enjoys, but it happens on day one here rather than in month three at a different shop.

- **Gap and latch check:** Entry doors, compartment doors and slide rooms all need even gaps and normal latch effort. Uneven closing force on a door is the cheapest early indicator that an opening has racked.
- **Roof line sighting:** Sighting down the roof edge from both ends shows deflection long before it shows in a photograph. A wave that was not there from the factory means load went somewhere it should not have.
- **Cap seam inspection:** Front and rear cap joints are the designed weak point. If a seam has opened or the sealant has torn rather than aged, the structure behind it took a load the skin did not.
- **Tap and bond test:** Tapping a laminated sidewall produces a clear tone where bonded and a dull tone where separated. Mapping that boundary tells us whether a dent is repairable or the panel has to come off.

## How We Repair Dents, Creases and Punctured Panels

On a laminated fiberglass sidewall, small dents are usually not pushed out at all. The outer skin is bonded to the substrate, so there is nothing behind it to push against. What we do instead depends on depth. Shallow deformation with intact bond gets filled and faired, then refinished. Deformation that broke the bond gets the affected area cut out, the substrate rebuilt, and a new section bonded in with a scarfed joint so the repair does not read as a hard edge under paint.

Aluminum skinned coaches behave differently. A stick and tin travel trailer, an Airstream, or the aluminum sided section of many toy haulers has a thin skin over a wood or aluminum frame with no bonded core. There we can often work the panel, but the skin work hardens and the corrugations do not accept filler well. Replacing a full skin section between framing members is frequently cheaper and always more durable than chasing a crease.

Punctures are their own category because the important question is what got wet. A hole the size of a fist in a sidewall may have been letting water into the foam core for six months before you noticed. We open enough of the panel to find the moisture boundary before we close anything, because a beautifully repaired panel over a saturated core fails within a year.

- **Shallow dent, bond intact:** Filled, faired and refinished in place. This is the least expensive outcome and it is only available when tapping confirms the outer skin is still bonded to the substrate underneath.
- **Dent with lamination failure:** The separated area is cut out, wet core material is removed, the substrate is rebuilt and a new skin section is bonded in with a tapered joint so the seam disappears under refinish.
- **Aluminum skin section:** Full skin panel replacement between framing members on stick and tin, Airstream style, or aluminum sided coaches. Cleaner and more durable than working a crease in work hardened aluminum.
- **Puncture and moisture mapping:** Any breach gets opened far enough to find the boundary of wet core. Closing a panel over saturated foam guarantees the repair fails, usually just after the season you needed it.
- **Slide face damage:** Slide room exteriors take curb and post strikes constantly. They are thin, lightly framed and unforgiving, and they must come back dimensionally correct or the seal will not compress evenly.

## What Hail and Storm Damage Actually Does to an RV Body

Hail is the most underestimated damage type we see, because on a car it dents sheet metal and on an RV it does something worse. A large stone strike on a laminated roof or sidewall can crack the gelcoat without denting anything visible, and that crack becomes a water path. Six months later the owner has a delamination bubble and no idea where it came from. On aluminum skin, hail leaves the familiar dimpling, but it also loosens rivets and opens seams along the edges of each panel.

Paintless dent repair, which is the standard hail remedy in the automotive world, has very limited application here. There is no backside access on a bonded sidewall and no way to work a panel that is glued to foam. On aluminum coaches with open framing there is sometimes access, and we will use it when it exists. Most of the time hail on an RV resolves into panel replacement plus refinish, or acceptance of cosmetic dimpling with the gelcoat cracks sealed.

Hail is a comprehensive claim rather than a collision claim on most policies, which usually means a lower deductible for you. It is worth documenting immediately, including roof photos, because carriers get skeptical about hail claims filed a year after the storm.

- **Gelcoat microcracking:** Impact fractures the brittle gelcoat layer without denting the panel. The crack is often invisible until water has tracked under it and produced a bubble the size of a dinner plate.
- **Rivet and seam loosening:** Repeated stone strikes on aluminum skin work the rivets and open the sealed seams at panel edges. This is why hail damaged trailers start leaking at the belt line the following spring.
- **Rooftop component damage:** Air conditioner shrouds, vent lids and skylight domes are thin ABS or acrylic and crack first. They are cheap parts and they are the most common overlooked line on a hail estimate.
- **Limited paintless repair:** Bonded laminated panels have no backside access, so paintless dent repair rarely applies. We use it on open framed aluminum builds where access genuinely exists and nowhere else.

## Entry Doors, Compartment Doors and the Hardware That Fails First

Compartment doors are the most frequently damaged part of any RV body and the most frequently ignored. They get backed into, they get left open and struck, their gas struts wear out and let them drop, and the hinges tear out of thin skin. A door that no longer seals is a direct water path into the basement storage, which on most coaches sits directly under the floor structure. We replace, rebuild and rehang them, and we address the frame the door mounts to rather than just the door.

Entry doors carry more complexity. A modern RV entry door is a bonded assembly with a frame, a screen door, a window, a lock set, a strike plate, and on many coaches an electric latch and a keyless pad. Any of those failing individually will present to you as a door that will not close right. We diagnose which one it is before ordering parts, because a full door assembly is a several thousand dollar item and a worn strike plate is not.

Hardware availability is the practical constraint. Doors are usually discontinued within about seven years of a model run ending. When the original is gone we source salvage, adapt a current equivalent, or fabricate the mounting to accept a modern replacement. We will tell you which path applies before you authorize.

- **Compartment door replacement:** New door, hinge, gas strut, latch and seal, plus repair of the surrounding opening if the hinge tore out. Priced from $200 for a simple swap to $1,800 for a large basement door.
- **Entry door repair or replacement:** Frame straightening, screen door rebuild, glass replacement, lock and strike work, or full assembly replacement. Runs $400 to $4,500 depending on whether the shell itself is serviceable.
- **Latch and lock systems:** Keyless entry pads, electric latches and their wiring fail more often than the mechanical parts around them. Diagnosing the actuator before ordering a door saves several thousand dollars.
- **Entry step replacement:** Electric and manual steps get curbed, bent and corroded. Replacement runs $400 to $2,000 including mounting reinforcement where the original bracket has fatigued.
- **Discontinued hardware sourcing:** When the original part is gone we source salvage, adapt a current equivalent or fabricate the mount. You get told which route we are taking and what it costs before work starts.

## Bumpers, Trim, Chrome and the Parts Nobody Stocks

Exterior trim on an RV does two jobs: it looks like trim, and it covers a joint that is holding sealant. When a rub rail, a corner molding or a belt line trim piece is damaged and left off, the sealant behind it gets full sun exposure and fails in a fraction of its normal life. Replacing trim is therefore not cosmetic maintenance, it is leak prevention, and we treat missing or lifted trim as an active finding rather than a nice to have.

Bumpers vary enormously by build. A towable rear bumper is often a square steel tube that doubles as sewer hose storage and rusts from the inside out. A Class A rear bumper is a painted fiberglass fascia over a steel mount. A Class C uses the cutaway chassis bumper plus a fiberglass surround. Each fails differently and each has a different repair versus replace threshold, which we assess with the part off rather than from a photograph.

Chrome and brightwork on older coaches is the hardest thing to source in this trade. Stainless corner caps, chrome mirror arms, anodized window surrounds and polished wheel simulators mostly stopped being produced. We polish and restore what is serviceable and go to the salvage market for what is not.

- **Rub rail and belt line trim:** Straightened or replaced with the sealant bed underneath renewed. Trim left off after a strike exposes the joint sealant to direct sun and cuts its service life dramatically.
- **Corner and cap moldings:** The vertical joint between sidewall and cap is covered by molding for a reason. A lifted or missing corner molding is one of the most reliable predictors of a future delamination call.
- **Bumper repair and replacement:** Steel tube bumpers on towables, fiberglass fascia on Class A, and cutaway chassis bumpers with surrounds on Class C. Repair versus replace is decided with the part removed.
- **Chrome and brightwork restoration:** Polishing, straightening and salvage sourcing for stainless corner caps, mirror arms, window surrounds and wheel simulators that are no longer manufactured for older coaches.

## What Body Work Costs and When To Involve Your Carrier

Body and paint labor is posted at $210 per hour. Beyond that, price is driven by two things: how many panels are involved, and whether the finish has to be blended into adjacent panels or can stop at a natural break. A compartment door swap on a coach with a solid single color runs a few hundred dollars. The same door on a coach with a full body multi stage graphic scheme can run several thousand, because matching the graphic across the panel is the real work.

On whether to file a claim: run the arithmetic honestly. A single compartment door or a bumper is almost always under a typical RV deductible and better paid out of pocket. Hail across an entire coach, a multi panel strike, or anything that involved another vehicle should go through the carrier. We bill direct with every major carrier and will write the estimate either way so you have a number before you decide.

Insurance-billed work may be written at carrier-negotiated labor rates that differ from our posted retail rates. We explain that difference in plain language before you authorize anything, and we never start hours you have not approved in writing.

- **Panel count drives cost:** Each additional panel adds prep, masking and blend time. Two adjacent small dents on one panel are far cheaper than the same two dents split across a panel break.
- **Graphics multiply the number:** Solid color coaches match easily. Full body multi stage paint with layered graphics requires reproducing the scheme across the repair, which is often the largest single line on the estimate.
- **Deductible arithmetic:** Single item damage is usually below a typical RV deductible. Multi panel and hail damage is usually well above it. We give you the written number before you commit to a claim.

## Process

1. **Bring the coach in for inspection** (Day 1). We check gaps, latch effort, roof line and cap seams, then tap test the damaged area to confirm whether the lamination bond is intact.
2. **Scope and written estimate** (Days 1 to 3). Line item estimate showing panels involved, labor hours at $210 per hour, parts, and whether the finish requires a blend into adjacent panels.
3. **Parts sourcing** (Days 3 to 21). Doors, trim and brightwork get ordered or sourced from salvage. This is the step that most often sets the calendar, especially on coaches older than seven years.

The shell is steel or aluminum automotive body work, which is straightforward, but the complication is the conversion: high top and pop top caps, awning rails, flares, roof racks and solar mounts all penetrate the body and all have to be resealed properly after any panel work.
