That is the failure mode we see most, and it is worth understanding because it changes what a proper repair looks like. Wind does not just tear fabric. Girard is the premium end, mostly cassette style with integrated electronics.

Identifying the exact unit matters because it determines whether the repair is a parts job or a replacement job. A Carefree Eclipse arm and a Carefree Altitude arm mount differently. A Solera power awning motor and a Dometic 9100 motor speak different control protocols. Sourcing the wrong assembly wastes two weeks, and on older A&E hardware the correct answer is frequently that no parts remain available and full replacement is the honest recommendation.

- **Dometic and A&E:** Dometic 8500, 9000 and 9100 series plus the older A&E lineage. Many A&E units from the nineties no longer have parts support, which makes full replacement the practical answer.
- **Lippert Solera:** Common on newer towables. Power and manual versions, with a distinct motor and control protocol. Solera arms are frequently available individually rather than as a full assembly.
- **Girard:** Premium cassette style with integrated wind sensing and its own control board. Failures here are usually electronic rather than mechanical, so diagnosis starts at the board.
- **Slide topper suppliers:** Carefree, Dometic and Lippert all build toppers, and they are sized to the slide box rather than to a catalog length. Every one gets measured on the vehicle before order.

## When Fabric Replacement Is Enough and When It Is Not

Fabric replacement is a legitimate, common and reasonably priced repair when the hardware is straight. Vinyl and acrylic both have a service life, and in this climate that is roughly seven to ten years before the coating chalks, the stitching gives up and the material loses its ability to shed water. If the arms are true, the roller tube is round and the tension spring still holds, new fabric on the existing hardware is the right call and it runs $400 to $2,500 depending on length and material.

Where it goes wrong is fabric replacement on damaged hardware. A roller tube that took a wind hit is no longer straight. New fabric on a bowed tube wraps unevenly, walks to one side as it rolls, and rubs a wear line into itself within a season. A tension spring that has lost preload will not hold the fabric taut, so it pools water, and pooled water on a patio awning is how you bend the lead rail the next time.

So the first thing we do on a fabric quote is check the hardware. Roller tube runout, arm straightness, spring preload, lead rail alignment and the condition of the mounting rail. ## Arm, Spring, Motor and Sensor Failures and How They Show Up

Mechanical awning failures announce themselves in a pattern. A binding arm that needs a shove is a bent elbow casting or a corroded pivot. An awning that creeps out on its own while driving is a failed travel lock or a spring that has lost tension. One side extending farther than the other is a sticking arm on the slow side, and continuing to run it that way racks the lead rail permanently.

Powered units add electrical failure modes. The most common by far is not the motor: it is the motor connector, the control board, or the limit switch that tells the head where the ends of travel are. A slide topper is the small awning that spans the top of a slide room, and its actual job is not shade. When a topper fails, the failure mode is quiet and expensive. The fabric loses tension and starts holding a pool of water over the slide roof. That standing water finds the slide seal and the topper mounting fasteners, both of which are penetrations through the sidewall above the slide box. Owners discover it as a ceiling stain inside the slide room, months after the topper first started sagging.

## Process

1. **Intake and unit identification** (Day 1). We photograph casting marks, roller end caps and the control head, and confirm exactly which Carefree, Dometic, Solera, A&E or Girard unit you have.
2. **Hardware and sidewall inspection** (Day 1 to 2). Roller runout, arm straightness, spring preload, lead rail alignment and mounting rail fastener condition. Wind damaged units get the wall checked for tear-out.

### Do you install awnings on camper vans and Sprinter conversions?

Yes. Van awnings mount to a rail or to roof rack feet rather than to a laminated sidewall, so the load path is different and the attachment has to be engineered to whatever rack system is already on the vehicle. We check the existing mount rating before quoting, because a Fiamma or Thule style awning loaded by wind will find the weakest fastener in that rack.
