# Five Tests That Separate a Slide Seal From a Window

> A window leak wets the wall during and immediately after rain, following the frame perimeter. A slide seal leak usually appears after the room is retracted, because water trapped in the cavity drains inward. ## Summary

Both wet the same wall. Sequence matters: window leaks appear during rain, slide seal leaks appear after retraction. Five tests separate them in an hour.

On a coach with a slide room and a window in the same wall, which describes most coaches, a wet spot low on the interior wall has two obvious candidates and they produce nearly identical evidence. The stain is in the same place. The moisture readings are in the same range. The owner theory is usually whichever one they read about most recently.

Getting this right matters because the repairs are not comparable. Rebedding a window frame is a few hours of careful work and a roll of butyl tape. Replacing slide seals and correcting room compression is a substantially larger job, and on a coach where the opening has moved it can be a structural job. Guessing wrong costs either an unnecessary large repair or a small repair that does not stop the leak.

Five tests, all of which an owner can perform with a flashlight, a strip of paper, some masking tape and a garden hose. None require removing anything. In combination they get to a confident answer in about an hour, and if they do not, that itself is useful information because it usually means the water is entering somewhere above and running down.

## Why the Two Produce the Same Stain

A window in a laminated wall sits in a cut opening with a flange on the outside bedded in butyl tape and clamped from inside. Water that gets past the butyl enters the wall cavity at the frame perimeter, runs down inside the cavity, and exits wherever it finds a path: a fastener, a panel joint, or the bottom of the wall where it meets the floor.

A slide seal leak does the same thing from a different starting point. Water gets past a bulb or wiper seal at the slide opening perimeter, runs down inside the same wall cavity, and exits at the same places. From inside the coach, both present as dampness low on the wall or at the floor junction, frequently several feet from either the window or the slide.

So the visible stain location tells you almost nothing, and this is the single most common reason owners chase the wrong repair. What does discriminate is timing, geometry, and controlled testing, which is what the rest of this covers.

- **Shared cavity:** Both entry points feed the same wall cavity, so both exit at the same fasteners, panel joints and floor junction.
- **Stain location is not evidence:** The exit point is determined by cavity geometry, not by proximity to the entry. Distances of several feet are normal.
- **Similar meter readings:** Moisture content in the affected area reads the same regardless of which perimeter the water crossed.
- **Both are perimeter seals:** Butyl tape behind a window flange and a bulb seal at a slide opening fail the same way: hardening and loss of compression.

## Test One: Log the Timing Against Rain and Retraction

Window leaks are rain synchronous. Water appears during the rain event or within an hour or two of it, because there is nowhere for the water to be stored. It enters, it runs, it appears. If your dampness shows up while it is raining and dries over the following days, that pattern favors a window or another direct exterior penetration.

Slide seal leaks are frequently retraction synchronous instead. With the room extended, the roof of the slide and the cavity around the room can hold water. Retract the room and that stored water gets squeezed and redirected inward, so the dampness appears hours or days after the rain, at the moment the room comes in. Owners who camp with the room out and find a wet floor after packing up are describing this exactly.

Keep a simple log for one month: date, whether it rained, whether the room was in or out, and whether moisture appeared. Four or five data points usually resolve it. This costs nothing and it is the highest value diagnostic available to an owner, because it uses the vehicle in normal service rather than trying to simulate conditions.

## Test Two: Read the Geometry of the Wet Area

Remove the interior trim if it comes off easily, or work from what you can see. A window leak tends to produce a stain pattern that is symmetric about the window center line or biased to one corner, because the failure is usually at a top corner of the butyl and water runs down both sides or one side of the frame. Look for staining that starts at the frame and works down, not staining that starts at the floor.

A slide seal leak biases toward the slide opening perimeter, most often at a vertical edge or at the bottom corner. It also frequently shows evidence on the room fascia trim, the inside face of the slide box, or on the underside of the slide floor where you can see it from outside with the room extended.

The third geometry clue is the floor. Water entering at a window has to travel down the entire wall cavity to reach the floor and will typically show a narrow wet band there. Water from a slide floor wiper seal enters at the floor level directly and produces a broader wet area extending inboard. If the wettest reading is at the floor and it spreads inboard rather than running along the wall, that points at the slide.

- **Downward from the frame:** Window failures stain from the frame perimeter downward, often biased to one top corner where the butyl let go first.
- **Opening perimeter bias:** Slide seal failures concentrate at a vertical edge or bottom corner of the opening and often mark the room fascia.
- **Narrow band versus broad spread:** Wall cavity travel produces a narrow wet band at the floor. Floor wiper seal entry produces a broad area spreading inboard.
- **Underside of the slide floor:** With the room extended, staining visible from outside on the slide floor underside is direct evidence of wiper seal entry.
- **Exterior chalk trail:** A vertical clean streak down the sidewall below a window corner marks where water has been running on the outside for seasons.

## Test Three: The Paper Strip and the Thumb Test

Extend the room and press every bulb seal along its length with a thumb. A working seal is pliable, deflects easily and springs back. A failed seal feels like a piece of hard plastic and shows a permanent flat set where it has been compressed against the wall for years. Note every location where it feels hard, and photograph them.

Then retract the room and draw a strip of ordinary paper through the joint between the seal and the sidewall at intervals of about a foot. You should feel consistent light drag everywhere. Any point where the paper slides through freely is a place with no compression, and water uses those points. Any point where the paper will not go in at all may indicate the room is misaligned and compressing too hard on that side, which produces excess wear and its own leak later.

For the window, the equivalent test is the frame perimeter. Run a fingernail around the exterior sealant bead at the frame edge, looking for cracks, gaps and any place the bead has released from either the frame or the sidewall. Then push gently on the frame from inside at each corner. Any perceptible movement means the clamp ring fasteners have loosened or the substrate around them has softened, and both are leak paths.

## Test Four: A Sectional Water Test With Masking

This is the confirming test and the discipline is in isolating one candidate at a time. Mask the entire slide opening perimeter with plastic sheeting and tape so no water can reach it. Then run a gentle hose stream on the window only, starting at the bottom of the frame and working upward, with several minutes of dwell at each level and somebody inside watching with a bright light and a moisture meter.

If moisture appears with the slide fully masked, the window is confirmed and you are done. If nothing appears after twenty minutes on the window, remove the slide masking, mask the window instead, and test the slide opening perimeter the same way: bottom first, then the sides, then the top, with dwell time between.

The temptation is to spray everything at once and see if it leaks. That tells you only that the coach leaks, which you already knew, and it wets the whole area so a second test cannot distinguish anything for days. Bottom to top and one candidate at a time is what produces an answer. Never use a pressure washer for this. Pressure will force water past seals that are functioning normally and produce a false result.

- **Mask one candidate fully:** Plastic sheeting and tape over the slide perimeter, or over the window, so a positive result has only one possible source.
- **Bottom to top:** Start low and work upward with dwell between levels. Starting high wets everything below and destroys the isolation.
- **Interior observer with a meter:** A moisture meter registers arrival behind a panel long before a visible stain appears, cutting test time substantially.
- **Gentle flow only:** A pressure washer forces water past healthy seals and produces false positives. Garden hose flow simulates rain.
- **Log the zones:** Write down which zone was tested, for how long, and the result. An untracked long test session becomes unrepeatable.

## When It Is Neither, and Where to Stop

A meaningful share of these turn out to be a roof leak entering above and running down inside the wall. If both isolated water tests come up dry and you still have a wet wall, the entry is above the test area, and the candidates become the roof to sidewall termination bar, the awning rail fastener line, a roof penetration, or the top of the slide opening flashing.

That is where owner testing usually reaches its limit, because the tests get harder to isolate and the consequences of guessing get larger. It is also where a moisture map matters more than a source hunt, because the repair scope is set by how far the water travelled rather than by the entry point alone.

### Why does my wall only get wet after I bring the slide in?

Because with the room extended, water collects on the slide roof and inside the cavity around the room. Retracting the room squeezes that stored water and redirects it inward. That retraction synchronous pattern is close to diagnostic for a slide seal issue, and it is why a leak that appears while packing up after a rainy weekend is almost never a window.

### Can I water test my own RV to find a leak?

Yes, with two rules. Isolate one candidate at a time by masking the others with plastic and tape, and work from the bottom upward with several minutes of dwell between levels. Use garden hose flow, never a pressure washer, because pressure forces water past healthy seals and gives a false positive. Have someone inside with a bright light and a moisture meter.
