# How to Read a Single Line on a Repair Estimate

> An estimate line has four parts: what is being done to the part, which labor category the hours bill against, the hour figure itself, and whether the part is new, used or reconditioned. Reading those four fields in order tells you almost everything about how the repair was planned.

## Summary

Each line carries an operation code, a labor category and an hour figure. Learning four abbreviations lets you audit an estimate without arguing about the total.

Most owners look at the bottom of an estimate and nowhere else, which is a shame, because the bottom number is a consequence and the lines above it are the decisions. A four page estimate contains somewhere between forty and two hundred lines, and every one of them says what will happen to a specific component, who will do it, and how long it will take. That is a plan, written in a compressed notation, and the notation is learnable in about ten minutes.

This matters practically. An owner who can read the lines can tell whether a roof reseal was written as a full penetration reseal or as a spot repair. Whether a panel is being replaced or repaired. Whether a blend was included next to a refinished panel or omitted, which is the single most common reason a metallic paint job does not match. None of that requires arguing about money. It requires reading.

What follows is the anatomy of one line, then the four abbreviations that carry most of the meaning, then the non parts non labor lines at the bottom that people find confusing. I use examples from our own estimate format, and the notation is broadly consistent across the industry because everyone uses the same estimating platforms.

## The Four Fields Every Line Contains

Field one is the part or the area. Front cap, left rear sidewall panel, roof membrane, entry door assembly, slide room fascia. On an RV estimate this field is often more descriptive than on an automobile estimate, because RV components do not have universal naming and the estimator has to be specific enough that another technician can identify the same thing.

Field two is the operation. What is being done: remove and install, remove and replace, repair, refinish, blend, or a manual line describing a procedure. This is the field that decides most of the cost, and it is the field owners misread most often, because repair and replace produce very different numbers on the same part.

Field three is the time, and field four is the labor category the time bills against. Our posted 2026 rates are Body and Paint at $210 per hour, Mechanical and Electrical at $260 per hour, Diagnostics at $285 per hour with a one hour minimum credited against an authorized repair, and Detail at $95 per hour. A line reading 4.2 hours means very different money depending on which of those categories it sits in, so always read the two fields together.

- **Part or area field:** Specific enough that a second technician could identify the same component. Vague entries here are where scope disputes start.
- **Operation field:** The single field that determines most of the cost. Repair and replace on the same part produce very different numbers.
- **Hours field:** Either a published time from the estimating database or a manual judgment entry. Manual entries should carry a written procedure.
- **Labor category:** Determines the rate applied. Read hours and category together, because the same hour figure can differ by $75 per hour in cost.

## R and I, R and R, Repair, and Blend

R and I means remove and install: the same part comes off and goes back on. You see this on trim, lights, glass and hardware that has to be removed to access something else. R and I lines are usually short and there should be a lot of them on any real estimate, because access is most of the work on an RV. An estimate with very few R and I lines was probably written from photographs.

R and R means remove and replace: the old part is discarded and a new part goes on. This line will have a matching part line somewhere with a price. If you see an R and R operation with no corresponding part price, that is either an omission or a part that has not been sourced yet, and it is worth asking which.

Repair means the existing part stays and gets corrected: dent repair, fiberglass crack repair, substrate replacement inside a laminated panel. Repair hours are usually judgment entries rather than database times on RV work, because no database publishes a time for sectioning a laminated sidewall. Blend is the fourth: partial refinishing of an adjacent undamaged panel so a color transition is not visible. On metallics and pearls, blend is not optional.

## How the Paint Side Actually Adds Up

Refinish lines work differently than repair lines. A refinish time covers preparation, sealing, application and, on a clearcoat finish, the clear. Estimating platforms carry base times per panel and then adjust for two stage and three stage finishes, which is why the same panel can read 2.8 hours on a solid color and 4.6 hours on a tri coat pearl.

Then there are overlap deductions. When two adjacent panels are refinished together, some of the setup and masking is shared, so the software deducts a small amount from the second panel. That deduction is correct and it is why the total refinish time is less than the sum of individual panel times. Owners sometimes read overlap deductions as the shop cutting corners. It is the opposite.

Blend time is typically calculated as a fraction of full refinish time for the adjacent panel, commonly around half. On a coach with a full body paint scheme and metallic base, omitting blends produces a visible edge under raking light, which is exactly the condition owners bring coaches back for. If an estimate refinishes a panel next to a metallic panel with no blend line, ask about it before the work starts rather than after.

- **Two stage versus three stage:** A tri coat pearl requires a mid coat and takes substantially longer than a solid or a standard metallic on the same panel.
- **Overlap deduction:** Shared setup between adjacent refinished panels is deducted automatically. A lower total than the sum of parts is correct.
- **Blend allowance:** Usually around half of full refinish time for the adjacent panel. Omitting it on a metallic guarantees a visible transition.
- **Paint supplies line:** Materials bill at $55 per hour times paint hours. It scales with the refinish time rather than being a flat figure.
- **Cut and buff:** Finish sanding and polishing after cure is its own operation. On a large coach it is several hours and it should appear as a line.

## What the Part Lines Are Telling You

A part line carries a price, a source and usually a code for the part type. New original equipment is what most RV structural components are, because there is no aftermarket for a molded cap or a specific sidewall panel. Aftermarket, used and reconditioned appear on appliances, hardware, glass and chassis components where alternatives exist.

Our parts policy is posted and simple: parts at $100 or less carry a 100 percent markup, parts over $100 carry 35 percent, and special order parts require a 100 percent non refundable deposit at the time of order because the vendors will not take them back. That deposit structure exists because a molded RV component ordered for one coach cannot be resold, and knowing it in advance keeps the authorization conversation short.

Freight deserves its own line on anything oversize. A molded cap or a full sidewall panel ships on a dedicated truck and that cost is frequently four figures. When freight gets buried inside a part price, insurance reviewers cannot verify the part and the line gets held. Ask to see freight broken out, both for your own understanding and because it clears faster on a claim.

## The Lines at the Bottom That Are Not Parts or Labor

Body supplies bill at $5 per hour times body hours. This covers abrasives, filler, tape, adhesives, fasteners and the consumables nobody itemizes individually because itemizing them would cost more than the materials. It scales with labor rather than being a fixed figure, which is why it grows on a large job.

Hazmat and disposal is a $45 flat charge when chemicals, refrigerant or liquefied petroleum gas is involved in the work. That covers regulated disposal, which is a real cost with a paper trail attached. California sales tax at 7.75 percent applies to parts and materials. Labor is not taxed, which is worth knowing because it means two estimates with the same total can have quite different taxable portions.

Finally, the estimate line itself. A collision estimate here is by appointment and insurance walk-ins are always welcome. An RV systems estimate is $150, credited back against an authorized repair, and it covers slides, awnings, water, electrical and generator work. An in depth diagnostic is one hour at $285, also credited against an authorized repair. Those figures are posted rather than negotiated, which makes them easy to plan around.

## Questions

### What does R and I mean on my estimate?

Remove and install. The same part comes off to give access and then goes back on. You see it on trim, lights, glass and hardware. Access work is a large share of any RV repair, so a real estimate contains many of these lines. An estimate with almost no remove and install operations was probably written from photographs rather than from an inspection.

### Why is the refinish total less than the sum of the panels?

Overlap deduction. When adjacent panels are refinished in the same session, setup, masking and mixing are shared, so the estimating software removes a small amount of time from the second and subsequent panels. It is a standard and correct adjustment. A total that equals the exact sum of individual panel times would actually be overstated.

### Should there be a blend line next to a repaired panel?

On any metallic, pearl or tri coat finish, yes. Blending carries the color and flake orientation across the transition so no edge is visible under raking light.
