Southern California owners tend to think hail is a problem for somebody else, and then they take a coach to Arizona, Colorado or the Texas panhandle and come home with forty thousand dimples in the roof and upper sidewalls. Storm losses on RVs happen mostly away from home, which adds its own complications: photographs taken in a strange campground, a claim reported from the road, and a decision about whether to keep traveling or turn around.

The thing owners underestimate is how much of hail damage is invisible from the ground. The dimpling in the aluminum or fiberglass is what everyone photographs, and it is usually the cheaper half of the problem. What matters more is the roof membrane, the skylights, the vent covers, the air conditioner shrouds and the seams, because those govern whether the coach stays dry through the next rainy season.

## What hail actually does to a recreational vehicle

Hail strikes an RV mostly on horizontal and upper surfaces, which on a coach means the roof, the front cap crown, the upper sidewalls and everything mounted on top. Aluminum siding dimples visibly. Fiberglass may dimple less but can fracture the gelcoat, and impacts hard enough to fracture gelcoat frequently disturb the bond behind it, which is where a cosmetic-looking storm becomes a delamination problem months later.

The roof is the part that matters most and gets looked at least. Rubber membranes bruise under impact without necessarily tearing, and a bruised membrane has lost material integrity at each strike point even where no hole exists. Fiberglass roofs crack. Seams flex and open. Skylights and vent lids are thin acrylic or polycarbonate and they fracture readily, often with hairline cracks that are invisible until the panel is examined from above under light.

Then there is everything mounted up there. Air conditioner shrouds, vent covers, antennas, solar panels and their mounting feet, and the sealant beds around every penetration. Solar panels in particular can suffer cell fracture with no visible glass damage and a measurable output loss that only shows on a test. None of that is assessable from a photograph taken standing next to the coach.

- **Roof membrane:** Rubber membranes bruise under impact without tearing, losing integrity at each strike point. Fiberglass roofs crack. Both matter more than sidewall cosmetics.
- **Upper sidewall and cap:** Aluminum dimples visibly, fiberglass fractures gelcoat. Gelcoat fractures frequently disturb the bond underneath, producing delamination that surfaces later.
- **Skylights and vents:** Thin acrylic and polycarbonate fracture readily, often as hairline cracks invisible from the ground and only findable from above under directed light.

## Coverage, perils and reporting a storm loss from the road

Hail is normally a comprehensive peril rather than a collision one, which usually means a different deductible than you would face on a collision claim. Wind damage, falling limbs, flying debris and flood generally fall under the same coverage, though flood in particular carries its own considerations depending on the policy. Read your declarations page and confirm which deductible applies before planning around a number.

Report from where you are, the same day if you can, and note the location, date and time of the storm. Weather event data is verifiable after the fact and it supports the claim substantially, particularly if you were traveling and the damage is reported from a different state than your garaging address. Note whether the coach was stored, parked at a campground or in transit when the event occurred.

If you are traveling, document thoroughly before you drive anywhere. Storm damage accumulates on a trip home through more weather, and separating the original event from what happened afterward gets difficult quickly. Photograph the roof if you can access it safely, all four sides, every skylight and vent from above, and the interior ceiling for any evidence of intrusion.

- **Comprehensive peril:** Hail, wind, falling objects and debris normally fall under comprehensive rather than collision, which often means a different deductible figure applies.
- **Event verification:** Record the date, time and location of the storm. Weather data is verifiable afterward and supports a claim reported from a state away from your garaging address.

## The matting survey: how hail scope actually gets built

Hail estimating uses a matting survey, which is a systematic count of impacts per panel across the vehicle. The estimator divides the surface into defined panels, counts dents within a measured area on each, records the sizes, and uses that density to determine whether a panel is repairable, needs replacement or needs refinish. It is tedious and it is the foundation of the entire scope.

On an RV the survey has to include the roof, and this is where hail claims most commonly go wrong. A survey performed from a ladder at the corner, or worse from ground level, cannot count roof impacts or assess membrane bruising. That work needs someone on the roof under directed light with the survey recorded panel by panel, and it needs to include every skylight, vent lid, shroud and sealant bed up there.

Panel counts also determine the repair method, which is why the count is worth doing correctly rather than approximately. Low density dimpling in aluminum may be workable. High density dimpling, or any dimpling accompanied by gelcoat fracture on fiberglass, generally moves toward panel replacement or full refinish. The line between those outcomes on a large coach is measured in tens of thousands of dollars.

- **Panel by panel counts:** Impacts counted within a measured area on each defined panel, with sizes recorded. Density and size together determine repairable versus replaceable.
- **Roof included:** The survey must be performed from on top under directed light, covering membrane bruising, seams, skylights, vent lids, shrouds and every sealant bed.
- **Gelcoat fracture noted:** On fiberglass, any fracturing is recorded separately from dimpling because it indicates possible bond disturbance underneath that will spread over time.
- **Equipment tested:** Air conditioners cycled, vents operated, and solar output measured against rating. Cell fracture behind intact glass shows up only as reduced production.

## Repair methods and where paintless techniques stop working

Paintless dent repair works by massaging metal back from behind, and it depends on access to the back side of the panel. On passenger cars that access usually exists. On an RV it usually does not, because the sidewall is a laminated sandwich with insulation and interior finish bonded behind the outer skin. There is no back side to reach without dismantling the wall, which defeats the purpose entirely.

So RV hail repair tends toward conventional methods: filling and refinishing where the substrate is sound, replacing panels or siding sections where density is high or the bond is disturbed, and replacing roof membrane where bruising is widespread. Full paint refinish runs $5,000 to $35,000 and up depending on the coach and the paint scheme, and on a full body paint coach with a multi-color graphics package the top of that range is realistic.

The roof decision is the biggest single variable. Membrane replacement runs $3,500 to $18,000. If decking underneath is compromised, structural repair goes on top of that, and if water reached the subfloor the range extends into water damage and subfloor repair at $750 to $15,000. Establishing whether decking is sound requires getting under the membrane, not standing on it.

## Wind, awnings, falling limbs and flying debris

Not every storm loss is hail. Wind damage on RVs concentrates on awnings, which fail spectacularly and predictably when left out in a gust, taking the arms, the rail and frequently a section of sidewall with them. The sidewall damage at the awning rail is the part that gets missed. It is a long mounting rail through the wall, and when an awning departs violently it loads every fastener along that rail.

Falling limbs produce a different pattern: concentrated impact on the roof with structural involvement underneath, often with membrane puncture and immediate water entry. Those need the same teardown discipline as a collision, because a limb heavy enough to breach a roof has loaded the rafters and the sidewall tops beneath it. What looks like a patch job frequently is not.

Flying debris in high wind produces scattered impact across one side, and it is worth documenting as its own event rather than folding it into a hail count. The damage pattern is different, the repair methods differ, and combining them in one undifferentiated description makes the scope harder for a reviewer to follow and easier to trim.

- **Awning failures:** Arms, fabric and rail plus the sidewall around the mounting rail. The wall damage along the rail is the commonly missed portion of an awning loss.
- **Falling limbs:** Concentrated roof impact with structural involvement below. Requires teardown discipline, because the rafters and sidewall tops carried the load too.
- **Flying debris:** Scattered impact on one side with a different pattern and different repair methods than hail. Document separately rather than merging into a hail count.
- **Immediate intrusion:** Any breach of the roof envelope means water entry within hours. Photograph interior conditions immediately, since the intrusion evidence is strongest at that moment.

## Timelines, catastrophe deployments and getting in line

Large hail events generate thousands of simultaneous claims, and carriers respond by deploying catastrophe teams that work at volume. Those adjusters are competent and they are moving quickly through a queue, which means an RV can get scoped with a passenger car mindset simply because there are four hundred vehicles behind it. This is the single most common reason a hail scope arrives without a roof survey on it.

Shop capacity also compresses after a regional event, and RV-capable booth space is limited to begin with. If your coach was caught in a storm out of state, getting it home and into a shop promptly matters more than usual. ## Process

1. **Document from where you are** (Same day). Photograph the roof, all four sides, every skylight and vent, and the interior ceiling before driving anywhere. Record the storm date, time and location.
2. **Report under comprehensive** (Within 24 hours). File the claim, confirm which deductible applies, and note that you were traveling if the loss occurred away from your garaging address.
3. **Matting survey at the shop** (Days 1 to 3 after arrival). Panel by panel impact counts including a full roof survey from on top, with membrane, skylights, vents, shrouds and solar all assessed.
